Question Will my existing 850w PSU be sufficient for an RTX 4090 ?

Hello , i currently have a system with i7 13700KF and RTX 3080 10GB but i need to upgrade to an RTX 4090 for a Deep Learning project. The system at this moment has a Corsair HX850 Platinum PSU. Will this PSU be enough to run the system? Nvidia recommends a 850w PSU but aftermarket manufacturers a 1000w one. Nothing in the system is overclocked. I will probably get the Gainward RTX 4090 24gb Phantom because it is the cheapest i can find.

Solution
The Guru3D review on that card says 850w should be good enough. And the HX850 is an excellent unit so I'm quite sure it can punch over it's head a bit.

A 1000w ATX 3.0 PCIe 5.0 compliant unit would likely be better, but what you have SHOULD be good enough.
Hey there,

How old is the PSU? 850 is the min for that GPU. It's transient power spikes can cause issue with older PSU archs.

I would be reaching for 1000w + for that GPU, depending on other specs. What system will this be matched to?

Corsair RMX 1000w are very robust, and top quality.

None of the systems in your sig will be powerful enough for that GPU. You need a CPU upgrade too, even if matched with a 3700x

Isn't the I7 13700KF enough for an RTX 4090? It is a last gen 16 Core CPU. The PSU i have is around 2 years old and as far as i know it has 10 years warranty. As i mentioned i need the GPU to train a Deep Learning Model otherwise the RTX 3080 is already sufficient for me in gaming at 1440p.

Thanks for the reply , i will never stress both the GPU and CPU at the same time i just need the GPU to run at 100% for training the model so i guess i will be fine. I will try with this PSU and if i have problem then i guess i will upgrade.

That's what I'd recommend. No way I'd replace an HX850 unless there was an actual need to unless you simply have ample financial resources and a desire to have a unit with the latest spec. I'd at least try it first and I think you probably will be fine but if you notice any problems at all with anything that seems power related, then it's likely due to the transient spikes/power excursions and then I'd just immediately upgrade as needed.

Apologies. Don't know what happened there. I may have seen the 3700x in your sig. I had thought you were running a Ryzen 3700x. No, your current CPU is fine for the 4090
