I need to upgrade my rig, i currently have an I5-3570K, Gigabyte GTX660 windforce, 8GB RAM, and an Asrock H61M HVS motherboard inside of an NZXT SOURCE 210 case. I want to upgrade to a 970 since it's a huge leap from this old 660 i have.

Ideally i would want the gigabyte G1 gtx970

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125684&cm_re=gigabyte_g1_970-_-14-125-684-_-Product

But i was worried about the compatibility with my computer, it has a length of 12.3 inches and my clearance on the case is 12.9 inches (330 mm) according to the nzxt website, so i think it would fit even though it'd be a little close. And it also says it needs one 6 pin and one 8 pin pci-e connector and my PSU only has two 6 pins, so i wonder if this GPU comes with an adaptor and would two 6 pins with one adapted to 8 be enough to power it? My gpu is also only 500watt, and even though nvidia website and newegg etc.. say 500watt the gigabyte site says 550 reccomended, so if i don't overclock would 500 be enough?

i'd really like to get that card if possible, but i can't afford to upgrade my PSU or anything since i only barely have enough for the card. If i can't get it here's 2 other one's i was considering

So i was curious if you could help me with the question of whether the card would work for my rig and if not which 970 would be better?

Why? The power supply i linked has two 8 pin (6+2) Pci-e connectors, and the gigabyte g1 runs on 1 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin, so the 8 pin from my psu would fit the 1 x 8, and i would be able to use only the 6 pin part without the 2 pin that makes it 8 pin on the 1 x 6 slot right? Or would i need to adapt the 8 pin down to 6?

xDarkxIdealsx - to my current knowledge, every 8 pin connector is "hybrid" 6+2 pin connector, they can be separated. And even if they couldn't be [never mit with such a case], it will work. 8 pin [6+2] can replace 6 pin anytime, though 6 pin can't replace 8 pin that easily.

What do you think of this PSU? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139059&cm_re=550w_psu-_-17-139-059-_-Product

It's corsair so it's a good brand, and it's got a $20 rebate so it's only $39, and it's 80+ gold! 550w :)

I just can't do that, i'm already going to be borrowing money for the gpu and psu, so $50 is the max i can afford and even that's pushing it. The only reason that Corsair one was one i could get even though it's $60 is due to the $20 rebate which will calm some of the rage from my borowee lol.

I figured since it's an 80+ gold from a decent company like Corsair that it would be better than an 80+ bronze like the 2 you listed, what's up with that?

Welp, i did it. Got the Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970, the Corsair CS550M 550watt 80+ gold PSU, and got the free game promotion where you get Assasin's cred unity, Far Cry 4, or The Crew (never heard of that one...) came to a total of $430 for both, although since i'm an impatient dunce i had to order 1 day shipping so i'm at $460 now lol. I wish i could've gotten that XFX or Roswell you mentioned, but some of the people on overclock.net said this Corsair was good enough to run this GPU and you think it's suficient enough (i think?) so i went with it. Should be here monday or tuesday since i've heard friday is considered a holiday to newegg for some reason, not sure why since they'll have way more customers due to black friday.

Anyway, thanks a lot for helping me so much, most people would've never stuck around to help someone in a single thread like that. :)

Oh! and you were 100% right about that power supply, check out this review for it

Depressing isn't it? -_-

Just got screwed by newegg, big surprise. they cancelled my order due to stupid security verification crap, just found out tonight. I'm going with amazon, specifically due to the fact that they have that XFX power supply you mentioned on sale for the same price :)

Yeah it was pretty funny

DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD
IT'S DEAD JIM !!!!

Well, my stuff shipped, says it'll be here tomorrow by 8pm :) Thanks for all the help, only thing i need to do now is figure out how to install that XFX PSU since i've never worked with power supplies before as far as installing/replacing goes.

Well, took me all day but i did it. Got the fedex package around noon, almost s**t a brick when it wouldn't boot after carefully installing the GTX970 gigabyte G1 and wiring up that XFX 550w PSU. Turns out it was due to a small 4 pin cable i had plugged into a slot labelled "CHA_FAN1" which i assume was "chassis fan 1" but the chassis fan actually had a wire that ran around the case ending in a 4 pin molex adapter so i didn't need to plug into this "CHA_FAN" slot.

Got everything up and running and it's beautiful, i'll take some pics of the rig to upload on here. GREAT performance, just loaded up The Evil Within @ 1080p with max settings, getting a solid 60fps at all times 😀 She's quiet as the grave too, not a HINT of coil whine, even quieter than my 660 was 0_o

Can't wait to try other games i couldn't get good fps on before with my GTX660 like modded to hell Skyrim with K-ENB, or Metro 2033/last light maxed out etc.. :) Thanks a TON for your help, i'm glad i listened to your advice, turned out great. I wanted to try 2 monitor Nvidia Surround since it has 1 x HDMI, 3 x DisplayPort and 2 x DVI but i only have VGA and HDMI at the moment.

I'm honestly glad You managed just fine and that You're happy. Well in general You'll be able to play anything You throw on Your GTX 970 with 3570K within next year I believe, for 100% everything at 1080p single monitor, all up to 60 fps [if we exclude some really bad optimized games, that are about to come]. I'm looking forward for photos! :)

It's just the stock cooler that came with the I5-3570K. I got my computer pre-built from ibuypower since i was afraid to build my own since i had never done so before (getting alot more confident after setting up this new GPU/PSU though. might get a new case and mobo next year if i can afford it :) ), it's the Ne74iE gamer extreme model if i recall correctly, came with

Asrock H61M-HVS mobo,
I5-3570K, GTX660,
8GB Crucial RAM,
500w Allied PSU (came with the case),
NZXT Source 210 case,
Western Digital 7200rpm HDD,
DVD/CDRW+/- burner/drive combo.

Also, what do you think of these headphones? Thinking of getting these next month since my old headphones broke, and my old mic broke as well so i figured i'd get back into twitch/youtube streaming using a good but cheap wireless headset like this Turtle Beach to record audio.

I'm sorry, I have no experience whatsoever with that brand, so I really cannot tell 🙁. All I've had experience with recently are Creative Sound Blaster Evo Zx, Creative Sound Blaster Tactic3D Wrath, Corsair Gaming H2100 [like pre-yesterday], and ASUS HS-W1. I personally buy normal headphones and separate microphone most of the time, so really can't tell here 🙁.

And before case, I'd change the CPU cooler :) it's enough if You don't OC, but it enlenghtens cpu life span.

Ah, i see. They're a pretty famous brand, they're the ones who make the super expensive xbox live headsets for like $200 and stuff. They're kind of like Bose, an "enthusiast" headphone manufacturer, alot of famous youtube personalities and twitch streamers like Markiplier, pewdiepie etc.. use them, although that's not alot of reason to get them i suppose lol. They are supposedly high quality though, their $100+ sets are real nice i've heard, just wasn't sure since i've never had the cash to buy a pair myself.

And nope, i don't OC my CPU, since my motherboard won't allow CPU OC'ing 🙁
