i bought a new samsung ssd and i want to migrate my OS to it from a 1 TB hdd. When i migrate, will the program delete all of my excluded files which i dont want to migrate from my HDD ?

Solution

1. What size is the SSD?
2. How much total used space is on the 1TB?
3. The only thing you can 'exclude' is files like music movies, docs. No, it does not delete them. Just leaves them where they are.

1. The SSD is 250 GB
2. The total used space on the 1 TB HDD is 845 GB
3. So will the data migration program delete my steam games for example?

Unless you have 600+GB of '.doc/.jpg/.mp3/movies, this will not work.
The only thing you can exclude items that are in the Libraries folders.

Applications and games cannot be excluded. And the total used space (excluding things in Libraries), must be below 200GB for that drive.

Do you have another drive laying around?

i have a 500 gb external hard drive. Will i have to copy and paste all of my games and wanted files to the external hard drive?

Yes. Get the total used space on the C drive or partition to below 200GB.

Solution
I have another question, can i just reinstall Windows 8 on the SSD and delete the windows folder on the HDD. Would this keep all of my games and files on the HDD but the OS on the SSD?

MUCH better to move everything you want to keep off that 1TB, and wipe that drive. Then move it back.
After the clean install on the new SSD.

Deleting 'just the windows folder' leaves behind a lot of junk.
Users, AppData, temp folders, etc, etc.

Alright i guess ill just use the samsung data migration program to move OS because it wipes my HDD for me right?

No, it does NOT wipe the original drive.
Nor should you, until you KNOW it all works OK on the new SSD.

Yes, mostly.

Verify it all works with the SSD, and SSD only. Then start messing with the HDD.
Before you move the files back, completely wipe the old HDD. ALL partitions.

ok, so i decided to just make a clean install of windows on the SSD. Can i just copy and paste games onto my SSD from the HDD or will that not work. Also, how do you wipe the HDD?

Find the Steamapps folder. That's where your steam games live.
Copy/paste that.
Then, in the Steam client, designate that new location.

How do i delete the partitions, the "delete volume" is greyed out. I should also add that there is a system reserved (E:) partition on the hard drive.

If it actually boots properly with ONLY the SSD connected, that system reserved on the HDD is just sitting there.

yes, the pc can boot windows from the SSD when its the only drive plugged in

Just delete and format the main partition.
