Will The New Z270 Boards From Asus Be Compatible With a 6700k?

I currently have a 6700k, but I was looking to upgrade my board (currently an LGA 1151 board). I am interested in the new Asus Maximus IX Formula board, but I am worried about compatibility issues. I know this may be an obvious answer to some, but I am somewhat new to the PC community, and I just want to make sure before dropping that kinda cash on a mobo, any helpful insight is much appreciated.

Physically, yes. But you may need a BIOS upgrade to make sure it will work. Why on earth would you need to upgrade your board? They are both LGA 1151 by the way.

Compatible, yes. What feature are you attempting to upgrade with this? There may be a simpler avenue. This will cause a headache in reinstalling/reactivating Windows by changing out motherboard by the way.

So I just finished building my PC, and had originally wanted the Formula 8, but due to market availability, and price increases (some retailers wanted 900 for that board lul) I opted for a cheap board until I was able to get my hands on one. The new formula came out and its cheaper than the 8 (until it sells out lol), plus it fits my cosmetic theme way better than my current mobo. Thank you for the help also.

Well again, you may have to wait for a BIOS update to make sure they work. Also, you may have to re-install windows because of a hardware change. According to ASUS, the 6th gen will work, but it's still a risk in my book. If cosmetics is really important to you, then go ahead, but I recommend getting a Z170 that fits your needs.

Z270 will have support for older cpu right out the box if it support them at all.

Thanks rgd1101. I remember reading that BIOS updates were needed. But maybe that was for Kaby Lake on z170 motherboards. But it's backwards compatible out the gate?

You need update for cpu that wasn't available when the motherboard was manufacturer. This time the i7 is already available and Z270 are just coming out.
