Will this computer work?

I have picked out a set of hardware which should become a computer once assembled but im not much of a hardware geek so i wont know if the components are compatible with each other.

Here is the list:

ASUS Rampage III Formula LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard is a 1366 mobo but the proc you listed is 1155... switch the mobo to a Z68 and you're good to go..

Don't know your budget, but it seems to me you're buying some quality stuff here. Why not add another $100 if possible and buy an SSD as boot drive? I'm dying to try that at some point.

boot drive? not sure of the term but im not sure if i will use the hard drive for much else then windows, i have several extern hardrives at disposal.

Tom's did a great writeup one time on making a SSD the main boot drive (Windows files) then using your HDD as data storage and such. It's supposed to make a big difference in boot time. Are you familiar with SSD's?

Yeah i understand the basics of it as a HDD is mechanical and SSD is solid state drive and works extremly fast.

I changed the motherboards so now i have an up to date one to go with the rest right?

yeah looks good... and in regards to the SSD you're already using an SSD as your only drive... as long as you don't need more than 256GB of space you don't need to get another one... if anything I would say you could add a traditional HDD for additional storage if needed. All you really need now is a case to put all that gear into... if you provide what you're leftover budget is suggestions can be provided

That should work out well for you... I would suggest that you go with the I5-2500k instead of the 2600k... This is because the cost difference is like 100 bucks and the performance difference is extremely minimal... especially in regards to gaming which is what it seems you intend to be doing. you could also do with a lower wattage power supply... 550/600 would still be more than enough... though if you plan on going SLI in the future then stay with what you got and it should work out..


EDIT... it seems the 2500k is sold out at newegg if you intend to buy from there 🙁 you could wait a little bit for the I5 2550K (or 2 months and wait for Ivy Bridge and the Z77 platform)

well i plant to keep this computer longer i kept the others, and now i will read more into computer hardware's and keep me updated, i want to be able to modify and repair/replace parts myself.

and the computer i have now are completly fine other then it can't cope with the new graphics and such.
