Hi Guys,

I have always received positive feedback on my system builds from this forum; thank you. We are a small company with 8-10 users. I am trying to build a file server for our small accounting office. The file size is not huge. All files are under 80 mb, and the majority, 70% of it, is under 5 mb. But we do constantly read and write. We usually add 20 to 25 GB of data annually.

Our current file server (build myself) is a Core i5 9400F, Asus Z390, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, and a Samsung 500 GB SSD mirrored to a 1TB Samsung SSD and WIN 11 Pro. We also run three separate backups daily, including Synology DS218 local, BackBlaze remote, and removable HDD taken home.

It has been working fine for the last 4-5 years. But recently, I have been reading a lot about the importance of ECC RAM for file servers. Even though I check memcheck on Win 11 and did not receive any error message. But for a piece of mind, I am thinking about two options.

Option 1 Buy:
Synology DS1522+, it comes with R1600 CPU and 8GB ECC ram

Second option: Build myself a system by using these components, which are more powerful and cheaper compared to Synology

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600 (according to amd site it does support ECC https://www.amd.com/en/product/11831) $150 CDN
Mobo: PRIME B550-PLUS (I believe it supports ECC Ram Unbuffered) https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B089CT5GDM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&psc=1 ($183
RAM: Timetec Hynix IC 32GB KIT (2x16GB) DDR4 2666MHz PC4-21300 Unbuffered ECC 1.2V CL19 2Rx8 Dual Rank 288 Pin UDIMM Server Memory RAM Module Upgrade (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08KTT4867/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A23AD5LOJUVSEP&th=1) $170
Operating system: Either install Win 11 Pro (transfer the licence) or TrueNas (Free) for file server
Own three SSDs: Put them in Raid format - current cost zero.
PSU: Seasonic Focus 80+ Gold 650W

Continue to back up on BackBlaze and Synology NAS Ds218 and removable HDD.

I guess I want some confirmation: if I go with option 2, will this hardware work, especially ECC RAM, if it is compatible with the system?

I also have a system currently not using it currently, with Asus mobo Prime B450 and Ryzen 5 2600. But on Amd site they specifically mentioned ECC support with Ryzen 5 3600 and not with 2600.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.
