It has always been possible to build a solid VIA chipset system, by skill or luck, but not worthwhile for me (skill takes too much time, and I'm a little short on luck).
If I have any skill, I'm unaware of it. My gfUltra card is from Creative, and so is my Live card and my mobo isn't to young either. My point is the only driver's I have loaded are the one's that came with the hardware. The only updates I made was with windows.
I could update some driver's, either way I'm sure I wouldn't see any difference, I'm not much for testing. Seems to be if it ant broke don't fit it, unless your a speed freak, and if something doesn't work right from the start and you need to download a fix, then I think that's F up and skill will come into play, while one searches the Internet day and night for a fix.
Here I load my driver's as a Die hard windows98se user, and within an hour I'm back to a normal life. But here it seems WinXP gets the hands down to being the best gaming OS, more faster, stable, you name it, they clam it. I haven't rushed out to get WinXP, because I gut feeling, plus what I hear tells me that I will become a Internet junky, looking for a fix. And all for what? Until I feel WinXP kicks win98 ass in gaming will I switch. Sure my system is stable, it's built to be a gamer, not a server.
I know bla bla bla, anyway it was refreshing to hear you say 98SE still gives slightly to moderately better gaming performance on MOST systems. Maybe I'm not alone after all, were becoming a rare bread.
