I did a clean install of a Gateway SX2800 with original 5 CD restore disks to 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

After it completed, I immediately had 1 issue. It showed an error "Windows setup could not configure to run on this computer's hardware"

I solved it via: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1651700/windows-setup-configure-run-computer-hardware.html

Now I have a new issue, where Windows Update is not working:

I click "check for updates":

Not true. The services BITS and winupdate are running. I tried stopping and starting them to see if that would help.

I tried Windows 'Fix It' and some other things. Still not working.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks for the suggestion.

It displayed: "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

It created a CBS.log file. I couldn't read it, so I copied it to a USB stick, opened it on a Linux machine. Here is some of the output:

2009-08-31 10:17:30, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2009-08-31 10:17:30, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start standard sample upload. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2009-08-31 10:17:31, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\Windows\servicing\sqm\*_all.sqm, flags: 0x6 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2009-08-31 10:17:31, Info CBS SQM: Failed to start always sample upload. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2009-08-31 10:17:31, Info CBS SQM: Warning: Failed to upload all unsent reports. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

The full log (renamed to cbs.txt so I could upload it) is here.

The word 'fail' appears 212 times. Is the OS corrupt? If so, how can that be, as it was a clean install? What can I do to repair this?
