Win XP freezes during defragmenting and other

I'm setting up a notebook PC that a sister bought. It is a used Compaq Presario 705US notebook which had a clean install of win Xp home. After I did all the updates with windows update EXCEPT that of SP2 (which I've heard, has a lot of problems) I've noticed that when defragmenting or sometimes while doing system updates the computer freezes. It didn't happen before the updates and it happens with every single defragmenting software as well as with other update functions although it doesn't seem to happen when using the computer normaly. I even did a burn terst with Sandra and it didn't freeze. Could itr be something with one of the updates? If so which one so I can remove it.

What you don't mention is exactly what software you've tried. That can make a difference!
