Win XP install stop error

I have been having a hard time getting XP to install. Here's what I have done so far:

Removed unecessary devices, reformatted, deleted partitions, set BIOS's to boot from CD, insert XP, power on. Now I just let XP reformat in NTSF, and everything seemed to be going smoothly until it started "installing devices". At that point I recieved the following error:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
- Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.
- If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advance start-up options, and then select safe mode.

My system specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon 1400
SOYO SY-K7V Dragon mobo (Via KT266)
256 MB PC2100 DDR mem (brand? prob generic)
Elsa Gladiac 920 gf3
Soundblaster PCI 512
Wester Digital 40 GB HDD
Sony CD burner

In this situation, it appears that you might have a bad black on the hard drive ... or a defective IDE cable.

I would download and run the Data Lifeguard tools and check the integrity of the drive.

THanks for the info...however, as I much as I like to think I know a lil about computers, much of this is still jargon to me. Can anyone help me to understand what exactly it is that I am looking for? Is it something I can DL and install thru DOS, or what? Remember that I haven't actually got XP installed yet so I have NO OS functionality.

The data lifeguard tools fit on a floppy. Download them from wherever you're posting from and take them home. I've found them to be pretty useless but they couldn't hurt I suppose.
