Got to agree with a few of the other people on here, ive been using and recommending Microsoft Security Essentials for real-time protection and Malwarebytes to fill in the gaps as a scanner.

That being said the biggest 'preventor' of system infection is common sense.

Theres a app for chrome and firefox called 'web of trust (WOT)' which can help you out.
