Hi, i recently upgraded to windows 10 yesterday. It's kinda crazy. It took like 2 hours to dl/install and it was kind of glitchy and i had the damn black screen cursor thingy, it took 1:30 to boot up too. Today it turned on in like 20 seconds, is way faster then my old 8.1.

My question is what if i want to switch mobos. Would it automatically setup or how am i supposed to dl 10 again. I never had the 8.1 cd because it came with my pc.

Q: What happens if I change the hardware configuration of my Windows 10 device?

A: If the hardware configuration of your Windows 10 device changes significantly (e.g. motherboard change) Windows may require re-activation on the device. This is the same experience as prior versions of Windows (e.g. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1). The free upgrade offer will not apply to activation of Windows 10 in such scenarios where hardware changes reset Activation.

Ugh, so i guess i should just buy my mobo and hdd right now and then pop in a new windows 10 disc? Wait, what if i want 8.1 or 7 back? can i get those instead

Do your hardware change first.
You can buy Win 7 or 8.1 instead, if you wish.

I can say from experience that you can, or at least i was able to swap in a new mobo and processor and was able to boot right into windows 7 from the previous build without problem i did have to re activate windows but a could still the original product key. I went from an AMD fx-4130 on a gigabyte mobo to a fx-8370 on an ASUS mobo.

Swapping the motherboard with an existing OS is very much of a 'sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't' thing.
You found the former. Often, that is not the case.

well, im gonna go from a msi p34x something and fx 6300 to a asrock fatality 990fx and fx 8320 wish me luck.ill probably update whenever i get time to do so

Hey, I got another question. Sometimes motherboards dont come out working on the 1st try or they usually break in a week or something. Can i still use that same cd, or do i have to download the iso and not activate the product key till im 100% sure this mobo is good. Also, what if i want to add a new cpu/ssd can that same cd still work

If you have to swap the motherboard, it will probably require reactivation. In the case of an actual broken one, I guess you'd call MS and plead your case.

New SSD, no problem.
