I am absolutely opposed to automatic forced updates, especially if they require a reboot: I have lost work too many times to reboot popups eating a keypress and locking me out of saving my work before the uncancellable reboot force-closes everything. This is absolutely unacceptable IMO, which is the main reason I have disabled automatic patch downloads on my PC - as long as patches haven't been downloaded, I don't have to worry about reboot prompts.

I don't disagree, which is why I'm still using Windows 7. I'm just saying, if I'm eventually forced onto Windows 10 and Microsoft insists on force-feeding me mandatory updates whether I like it or not, I'd be marginally less annoyed if they stuck to fixing legitimate problems, as opposed to gumming up my OS with absolutely any godforsaken thing they see fit to push out.

you really don't know how software testing works do you,

no i don't but an iOS update is like 40 megabytes , a windows update is 3-4 gigabytes , everytime ! and everytime there's a new bug , like in the latest build 14379 my google chrome is stretched out of the screen for no reason

Thankfully, I have Windows 8.1 Professional so when/if I upgrade to Windows X, I should still be able to disable automatic updates through group policies. If that quits being an option, I may end up blackholing Microsoft-related netblocks.

Well I can tell you this, anyone that tries to force updates on me will force themselves off my computer.

There will be a surprise announcement from Microsoft after this date have passed to say upgrades to Windows 10 will always be free. This is a scare tatic to get everybody to upgrade now.

Sorry Microsoft. No thanks. I'll stick with Linux Mint.

They said that a year ago.

if your having a moaning about privacy its no issue as any OS made tracks what you do get over it since 10 has come out has fixed many issues any of the previous OS microsoft has ever released end of the day u think your being tracks stay out of those illegal torrent & hack sites & apps there no diffrence in piracy you own a phone your government is spying microsoft have been more cruisier than they ever were i havnt felt like i been spyed on but end of the day you do dodgy things online you pay the consquences for it so who that moan stop trolling ranting & raving grow up days of old are gone stay legit using legit software keys & you wont have an issue most people & users are small fry to them they wana sell you apps to pay for development of 10 & make $ they wana beat Apple in sales & microsoft is far beter than any OS around atm

Setting aside the principle of the thing (i.e., it's my computer and my data, and I have the right to control what is done with both,) it's not anything 'dodgy' I'm doing that worries me. It's what Microsoft, the government and any criminals who manage to hack into their systems may do with information they glean from my legitimate, legal activities.

Do you really want your Social Security number, bank account password, health history, legal history, and God knows what else sitting in one of their databases somewhere, waiting for some clever hacker to come along and swipe them? Really? It happens all the time, don't think Microsoft is immune. Or that any government agency who might subpoena that information from them is. Or that any of the above entities are even competent not to mix your information up with that of someone else who also owns a Windows computer and has a similar name to yours and a shady history, landing you on a terrorist watch list, or subject to asset forfeiture, or just having to provide proof that you're not incarcerated every time you try to use a government service (I know that last one does happen, because it's happened to me!)

Bottom line, the more of your information is out there, the more potential there is for it to be acquired and abused by people you never intended to give it to. It's well-nigh impossible to cut off the flow of data entirely these days, but some of the trade-offs are more worthwhile than others. In this particular case, I'm not willing to trade open access to my entire life for an OS, no matter how good it is. When I pay for a piece of software to run my PC's hardware and manage my applications, that is ALL I want, and the purchase price is ALL Microsoft is entitled to.

None of that is restricted to Microsoft or Windows 10.

No, it isn't. Just because I can't stop bad actors from getting at my information by any means whatsoever, doesn't mean I'm obligated to make it as effortless as possible for them by handing it over to anybody, any time they ask. See my comments above about some trade-offs being worth it and others, not.

I get that. But all the "OMG Windows 10!!" hate is simply silly. People are giving away far more elsewhere.

Ive seen people say Windows 10 (the rest too) and Google are spyware. Both are right and add in Facebook while your at it. All three are also in the pocket of the fascist FED who is their overlords.

Imagine the storage requirement(not to mention bandwidth) to spy on everyone(including taking files and all keystrokes as some users claim).

That from a company who removed unlimited Onedrive storage because a few users would abuse it. I would be betting outside of stuff you store on Onedrive and other MS services and general telemetry(app crashes/usage stats(that many are now collecting)/maybe some targeted advertising[that can be disabled at this time]), they are unlikely collecting users actual files(Windows defender can samples for further scans, but that is off by default I think).

I am not saying MS is not pushing it here, but I do not think they have the resources to perform some of the actions users claim they are performing.

Microsoft has to rework the lame backup programs in Win10. File History can't backup the whole system drive/PC, and Win7 backup can't auto-delete backups when out of disk space on the destination drive. This is beyond stupid.

Yeah so why isn't anyone making a big deal about tracking cookies or the ever growing Cloud Storage?
Oh and what about Apple?

This is an excerpt from their site

What personal information we collect
◾ When you create an Apple ID, apply for commercial credit, purchase a product, download a software update, register for a class at an Apple Retail Store, contact us or participate in an online survey, we may collect a variety of information, including your name, mailing address, phone number, email address, contact preferences, and credit card information.
◾ When you share your content with family and friends using Apple products, send gift certificates and products, or invite others to participate in Apple services or forums, Apple may collect the information you provide about those people such as name, mailing address, email address, and phone number. Apple will use such information to fulfill your requests, provide the relevant product or service, or for anti-fraud purposes.
◾ In the U.S., we may ask for a government issued ID in limited circumstances including when setting up a wireless account and activating your device, for the purpose of extending commercial credit, managing reservations, or as required by law.

Face it your not getting away with out being tracked unless you really need to hide use Tor but even that is under scrutiny due to illegal activity

Speak for yourself. I don't take selfies. Or own a smartphone. Or post anything personally identifiable at all on Twitter, or Facebook, or any social media site. That part is easy. Windows is a particular problem because it's actually on my computer and necessary to its operation, and I can't avoid it without losing access to a bunch of legacy programs I'm unwilling to give up.

But a lot of people do do that stuff.

Improving the spytools ! A year ago I left internetexplorer the first time, this time I could really leave windows ! Serioulsy guys, this can't be legal ! Not in USA, not in EU ! And yes, the world really needs a mobile os to replace android ! Why nobody starts a sourceforge project ??!?

To explain(in part)why spying is wrong, If you dont care google and microsoft have your girlfriend naked pictures or see your penis in the webcam... you know that the bilions that the sharks of wall street makes are mainly because of informations. Now with the informations that microsoft and google has they could raise trilions from the markets.
