Question Windows 10 (BSODs when idle)

Hi.

I have been trying to fight off my problem with my BSOD problems. For a long time my computer would crash usually once a week or so, which was fine. At least it wasn't annoying.
However the last week I've been getting an increased amount of BSOD's.

First my system specs:
Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 pro gaming
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600x
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x16)
GPU: 2070 super
PSU: Corsair 1000watt
SSD: 1tb m2

What I tried so far:
Reinstalling drivers.
Memory testing
Using various command line tools to scan windows for errors.
Reformatting and doing a clean install of windows.
Updating BIOS
Resetting BIOS to default values, (Custom fan speed for chassis/XMP for RAM)

Nothing have helped. I usually get different kinds of BSOD bugchecks, but since I reformatted I only have a few dumps to share

Minidumps:
minidump

EDIT 8th may
New minidump 8th may

Thanks in advance for your help, if you need anything else let me know.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Your link is throwing an Error 1020 for me. Regardless, let's try moving on.

Which version of Windows 10 are you on? Ideally you should be on version 20H2. By latest BIOS, can you mention the BIOS version. Most people come around here and state they are on the latest BIOS but tend to have one or more pending. How old is the PSU in your build? When stating reinstalling drivers, have you tried reinstalling them in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator? Which two slots are you populating the motherboard with the sticks of ram? Manually input of ram timings and settings or X.M.P?

Windows version: 20H2.
BIOS version: I used to run version 7C37vAC however few days back I updated to version 7C37vAD2
My PSU is around 1 year and 8 months old.

I always install in elevated state. I have tried removing old drivers before installing new drivers too.
My RAM run on auto XMP profile on my motherboard. The crashes happen no matter if I disable XMP or run it in profile 1 or 2. I also tested my RAM and they haven't been moved, my machine worked fine for more than a year without a problem. They are in A2 and B2 lanes. Which is the recommended lanes according to the manual.

i saw Kernel Auto Boost lock blah blah error and I thought, that is a lan error.
then I saw steamwebhelper and thought, another one...

May 26 2017rt640x64.sysRealtek NICDRV 8169 PCIe GBE Family Controller driver https://www.realtek.com/en/

i see why
try 4th link under windows here - https://www.realtek.com/en/componen...0-1000m-gigabit-ethernet-pci-express-software

now 4th bsod mentions part of nvidia drivers are victim. It might be lan or could be Nvidia drivers are at fault too.

stack text in errors isn't being obvious so I have to guess based on what was running. And the errors.

Thanks I will try this. I know the computer will crash even without the nvidia drivers. Though I haven't had a crash in 24 hours so far.

Maybe it did help a little, it took some extra time before the PC crashed this time. But ultimately didn't solve the problem.

Memory testing

how did you test memory?
Try running memtest86 on each of your ram sticks, one stick at a time, up to 4 passes. Only error count you want is 0, any higher could be cause of the BSOD. Remove/replace ram sticks with errors. Memtest is created as a bootable USB so that you don’t need windows to run it

another browser crashed. can't blame same thing so quickly this time.
try updating chipset drivers - https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am4/x570

Tried updating both chipset and realtek driver, so now every driver should be up to date. If I crash again I'll run another memtest just in case. Thanks for the help so far!

So ran the memtest again, still no errors at all.
I decided to install an older nvidia driver, which worked for three days without any problems, and then boom, now I keep getting bsod every few hours no matter which nvidia driver I am using.

The dumps as I am reading them, seem to indicate a driver problem, but I can't find out which driver is the problem. My suspicion falls on nvidia drivers though, or maybe the realtek driver.

so dwm.exe being victim in crash on 15th would agree with your suspicions but rest are keeping their blame to themselves.

all of your 3rd party drivers are made by one of three companies:
AMD 3 drivers
Nvidia 3 drivers
Realtek 2 drivers

and they should all be on newest. you updated chipset and Realtek a few days ago.

Now your Nvidia drivers are dated 23rd April. I have latest, dated 29 April. I wouldn't expect that make a massive difference . Version 466.27

what brand m.2?

Nvidia driver 466.27 crashes my PC more often it seems. The previous version still crashes but not as often, However both drivers work fine ingames and stresstests. I stresstested using furmark, superposition, cinebench, kombustor. And my pc doesn't crash. It doesn't crash when I play games, at least it haven't so far.

I have a addlink S70 1TB SSD NVMe PCIe Gen3x4 M.2 2280. Link: https://www.addlink.com.tw/pcie-s70-new

I doubt its my m2 as it reads and write data fine.

Once I get home I'm thinking of running driver verifier, and if that doesn't give a solution, possible find a 2004 version of windows 10, instead of 20h2. Any suggestions would be welcome though

not heard of addlink before

I only asked about nvme as really, if PC crashes with only 8 drivers installed, it could be hardware
maybe run their toolbox on drive - https://www.addlink.com.tw/ssdtoolbox

i don't think running 2004 is the idea. I think 2104 can't be far away, I was sort of expecting it last week

have you tried running DDU and instead of getting drivers from Nvidia, run windows update and let it find olderr Nvidia drivers and see if that makes any difference.

Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 pro gaming (appears to be newest bios)
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600x
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x16) - passes memtest
GPU: 2070 super
PSU: Corsair 1000watt (less than 2 years old)
SSD: 1tb m2

your specs similar to mine, differences easier to list than whats the same. Slightly different cpu & ram, my PSU isn't 1k.

What model Corsair PSU?

shame ryzen can't run without gpu to see if it still happens. Shame gpu almost impossible to find now (2070 super even more so)
try running Prime 95, it will test CPU & Ram - - https://www.mersenne.org/download/
Prime 95 how to Guide: http://www.playtool.com/pages/prime95/prime95.html

What power plan are you running in windows 10?

Their toolbox really don't do anything :/

I tried uninstalling nvidia driver, however now everytime I go into safe mode my PC crashes. :D - (I always use DDU in safe mode to uninstall drivers).
I downloaded the driver from windows update, didn't have a crash for a few hours, then just now I had a "freeze" computer didn't show a BSOD but it problably was. Screen and audio was just frozen for 5 minutes until I forced a shutdown.

I'm trying to update to the newest version fo windows now, (21h1) I belive it was called?

PSU is apparantly not 1000watt only 750watt, sorry for misremembering.

Model:
Corsair CP-9020131-UK TXM Series 750 W TX750M ATX/EPS Semi-Modular 80 PLUS Gold

EDIT:

Ran Prime95 for an hour while cleaning, no problems.

version updates are almost the same as clean installs, just you don't lose anything. It just replaces windows. could explain why safe mode works now.

i saw a Gigabyte boot screen I hadn't seen before, thats about as exciting as the upgrade got.

i sent link to crystaldiskinfo, not that one. it doesn't help they both on same page
crystaldiskmark checks speed
Info checks health

thought it may not show much on an ssd

Found a thread on reddit where a lot of ryzen users reported getting BSOD after january update, which is where I started getting BSODs.
They said to try and disable CPU boost in BIOS and turn on AMD cool and quiet, and set power state from auto to typical. For them it worked, so lets hope it works for me too.

So I have disabled CPU boost and set the power state to typical instead, but they removed amd cool and quiet from x570 afaik, and I can't find it in BIOS.
lets hope this works, though its a small hit to performance, but stability is better.

Also changed BIOS to UEFI from CSM.

are these crashes tied to bsod or pc just crashes?
as if 2nd its not windows.
stay in safe mode, do you crash in here? at least you can get there now.
you can't do anything in safe mode really, im just curious if you still crash

Also changed BIOS to UEFI from CSM.
and the pc still boots? those are boot methods, csm is the legacy boot method that matches MBR drives, UEFI was made to replace it.
its a long story, I wish i had saved it last time I wrote it down.
UEFI matches GPT drives but as its backwards compatible, can also boot MBR
main difference between mbr and gpt is max drive size. MBR max size is 2.2tb, GPT max size is 18.8 million tb so we have a way to go before we need to change again.

I get blue screen with error code ntoskrnl.exe+codeline everytime.
Before updating windows, and going into safe mode. I would boot windows up and get the usual login window, no problem and I could even let the PC sit at the login windows, but after logging into safe mode, the computer would crash within 30 seconds and give me a BSOD.

Now at least when I tried it just before I could get into safe mode without a crash and let it sit for 5 minutes while doing what I wanted to do, and restart the PC without getting a BSOD.

The info you wrote about my rig is correct.
It doesn't seem to be a hardware problem, but a driver problem, or maybe as someone said on the reddit forum, it could be the bios auto settings giving maybe like too low voltage while the system is idle, which causes the crash, which is why they said to change it to typical instead of auto. I have never gotten a BSOD while doing heavy tasks such as encoding movies, rendering animations, playing modern games. Its only when I like watch a youtube, watch a movie, computer is idle, when its basically not working.

Yeah I read up on UEFI/CSM and it seems neither should be a problem, but no reason not to run UEFI unless you run older systems/hardware iirc.

so share the dumps as one might show us something.

I can only guess if i can't look.

change what to typical?

win 10 prefers uefi, it will use it if it can tell mb supports it.
UEFI is the bios, but its also a boot method. UEFI = Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. Its everything in the bios, before 2009 the bios had no idea what the mouse was, and had limitations that Intel and a number of hardware makers wanted to overcome, so UEFI was created to fix them
CSM is there to emulate an old bios for people who want to use older operating systems or have older hardware. Win 7 32bit PC can't boot UEFI so it was necessary for people with those.
