Okay, so i might be building a computer (my fist build) at the worst time possible. i just ordered all my parts and they'll be here in a few days, HOWEVER, windows 10 is not out for purchase yet. my question is, if i buy windows 8.1 now and install it on my rig, will i be able to upgrade it to 10 as i did on my laptop even though we're now past the upgrade launch date? i dont want to screw this up as i really don't want to be stuck with windows 8 or have to pay microsoft an extra 120.

Yes you can still upgrade it. You have over a year left to get the free upgrade (July 29, 2016) so don't worry. 😀

Given how I am finding Windows 10 I would rather stay on 8.1 for a while.

Only if you bought the excluded Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise.

Unless my post was missed; You can buy Windows 10 Retail from the Microsoft Store. You can then download it and build your own USB/DVD. You can then clean install on a blank harddrive use the key provided when you bought your copy.
