Question Windows 10 Feature Update 2004 Bonked My HD

I allowed Windows 10 to install feature update 2004 on my PC. After five hours I returned to find a black screen with Windows logo and spinning dots.
I rebooted the machine and got the same screen plus "Preparing Automatic Repair". Successive reboots leave me at this screen indefinitely. The system never enters system recovery.
Now I can't boot the machine with recovery media, either USB or CD with the drive plugged in. The drive is recognized in the BIOS.
Putting the drive into an external drive enclosure connected to another PC and using "Windows Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management," I can see the drive but I can't assign a drive letter.
The drive is a 1TB Western Digital WD 10EZEX
If I could get into recovery mode I would try running:

BOOTREC /SCANOS

BOOTREC /FIXMBR

BOOTREC /FIXBOOT

BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD

as I think the the MBR is corrupted or missing.
Anybody have any ideas as to how I can get into this drive? I need the data that's on it.
