Hi,

I've been having a issue with my file explorer which started around 3 weeks ago. Basically sometimes, usually opening folders with a lot of files, the icons won't all load and the green loading bar will never reach a completion. From this point out certain thumbnails/icons will be missing when I open up new folders. Which will reach a certain point where all my thumbnails will be missing and I not be able to see the folders and drives you normally see on the side of the file explorer except quick access.

I've tried various methods and softwares like chkdsk, scanning my drives using crystaldrive, clearing thumbnail/icon cache and editing my file explorer settings.

Restarting my PC is the only way I've found to fix the problem temporarily before it happens again after reboot.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestion I'd greatly appreciate it.

What files are in those folders?
Any video files?
If you have any corrupted video files in there, then that will mess up thumbnail generation.
Change view mode to List.

No video files, just images
And a bit of added info. When viewing a folder which causes the problem may not necessarily give the problem again after a reboot.

Also not sure if this related in anyway. Sometimes when trying to delete a image will get me the message "the action cannot be completed because the file is open in Photos". Closing Photos in task manager fixes it but I have no idea why I'm getting this message since it's not open.

1. Does this happen with every folder or just some?
2. I need to know the exact size and the exact number of files in the folders that don't function properly. Right-click on the folder, select Properties, and under the General tab record the size and number of files. Do this for each folder that is causing the problem.
3. If you have folders that function properly, repeat the process on one or two.

Then post them.

The cause can be a Windows indexing problem or storage media that is not very fast or folders not optimized for their contents. But, first, let's have the numbers and go from there.

You also said "From this point out certain thumbnails/icons will be missing when I open up new folders." I'm not sure what you mean by this. If you open a new folder with no files in it there of course will not be any thumbnails or icons.
