No they are just doing a staggered release. They have already outlined the release schedule somewhere.
It's not just going to be a free for all on day one.

That would at least be decently efficient. I never thought Blizzard would use Bittorrent technology either, but they came around pretty quickly in the mid 2000's.

Let's just wait and see. Who knows? Maybe the stars will align and this one will be smooth... (background manic laughter...)

For sure. The servers would merely seed and the seed pool would expand very rapidly, eventually the servers would not be needed at all except perhaps integrity checks. It would truly be the Widows 10 ecosystem cross platform and it's sounding like everything but the kitchen sink is included.

You don't get a product key because i think everything is locked to your microsoft account that they make you sign up for. So when logging in the first time, it probably uploads computer data like MAC addresses and disk drive ID's.

You can create a local account in Windows 10 just like in Windows 8.

And the MAC addresses for certain hardware is uploaded for activation so that if you change it it will be able to know to ask for reactivation.

For the Tech Preview, there certainly is a license key. Generic key, because it's just the Preview. But it is there.
And no, everything is not locked to your MS account. What about standalone PC's with no network connection?
