I just built my gaming desktop and was wondering if I Should download windows 10 onto my new desktop until I purchase windows which could be around months time.

Solution
Might as well purchase Windows 8.1 now and then Windows 10 will be a free upgrade and you applications will all run in Windows 10 without modification.

Yes, you can. Be advised it is still very much a Preview, and not recommended for a primary OS on a primary PC. There may be issues.

Having said that, I've had it on a secondary PC since day one, and it is quite stable.

And when you get whatever OS eventually, it will be a full reinstall.

So would I have to backup my files onto a usb once I get my new os?

Yes.

Whenever you need to do a clean install, you will need to reinstall your apps or games.
That is a pain.
For user files and settings, you can use windows easy transfer to export to a different device and import them back after your clean install.

My suggestion is to save yourself the hassle and buy your windows now.
W-10 is supposed to be a free upgrade if you already have 7 or 8 for the first year.
If you have no installed os, I imagine there will be a charge.
And, you are supposed to be able to do an in place upgrade.
It remains to be seen how save and trouble free that will be.

We're not sure yet, but seeing how Tech Preview can be installed I would imagine that you could simply perform an upgrade as a Windows Update from Tech Preview to proper Win10, given that you have a valid license.

That said, you should still be aware that the possibility exists that you will have to do a full reinstall, without the option for keeping your files.

Actually, current thought is that a fully upgraded Preview can be upgraded to the Release without a full reinstall. Obviously, that may change.
However, they have NOT said what will happen with a clean install of Win 10 and no previous Win 7 or 8 license key. Buy it...for how much?

Further however, I read this as the OP wanted to install Win 10 'for now', and then buy Win 8.1 in a little while when he can afford it. For that, there is no option but a full reinstall. There is no up/downgrade.
