The Windows 10 in my old home office computer was updated a few times since it was installed some 1+ year ago. These past few days however, whenever I turn it on or off, it always attempts but fails to do another update, with the error message "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer"

I have a 150 Mbps connection and I haven't knowingly changed any security setting. The 90GB C: drive still has ~40GB free. I normally turn on my computer at 10-11 am and turn it off at 2-4 am.

Hardware:
  • Phenom II x4 970
  • MSI 970A-G43
  • 2x8GB DDR3 1866 G.Skill
  • GTX 950
  • Crucial BX500 120GB
  • Toshiba P300 7200 2TB
Windows:
Version 22H2
OS build 19045.2251

What could be the reason for the failed updates? Is it possible that it's trying to install Windows 11 which is not supported by the hardware?

Solution
See if this helps:
right click start button

choose powershell (admin)

copy/paste this command into window:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

and press enter

Then type SFC /scannow

and press enter

Restart PC if SFC fixes any files as some fixes require a restart to be implemented

First command repairs the files SFC uses to clean files, and SFC fixes system files

SFC = System File Checker. First command runs DISM - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/what-is-dism?view=windows-11

See if this helps:
right click start button

choose powershell (admin) .........................

That did it. The first process (took 17 minutes) didn't find any error. The second one (3.5 min.) reported that it found some corrupt files and repaired them. Thanks a lot.

I vaguely recall there being an extended power outage during an update. My modem is not connected to the UPS anyway, so I just shut down before the battery ran down. That was some time ago and I haven't had any problem until recently.

I spoke too soon. It's back again today. Updating (goes up to nearly 100%)...... update fails......undo......restart........repeats undo & restart....... Had to wait for at least 10 mins for the whole cycle before I can use the computer. Any more ideas other than a fresh install?
