no it used to work on 32 bit windows but not in 64 bit with extra 4 gigs of ram.Now running with 8 gigs. i've tested ram to death (memtest86) and it shows no problems. for years i have run Microsoft Security Essentials no problem . I'll try safe mode tho

32 bit Windows has emulation for 16 bit programs built in. 64-bit Windows only has emulation for 32 bit programs. If the program ran on 32-bit Windows 7 and not 64 bit, then chances are it's a 16 bit program and you may have to use something like XP Mode to be able to run it in 64-bit Windows.

yeah thats bad news. what i don't understand is that everything works fine with 4 gigs 2 x 2 gigs of RAM and i'm using the same sockets. Is it because of the heavier load that 2 x 4 gigs puts on the system? Is there a motherboard test? Thanks for your help. Dazed and confused.....and all my other programs work fine

What were the models of the old Ram? It might that Rip jaw ram is proving heavy for the slot while the ram's that are normal or come pre-equipped with the system are less heavier and were meeting with the specifications of the ram slot. Although i suspect the program that is crashing, what program are you using? Is it using the full capacity of the Ram or just normal usage?

old ram was 240 Pin 1.5v DDR3 PC3-10664 Non-ECC Dimm samsung, 2 gig x 2 the new memory is 4GB x 2 G.Skill DDR3 PC3-10666 Ripjaw Series (9-9-9-24) Single desktop memory module. i ran memtest86 on the G.Skills and it passed once should I do more passes? The program in question is Second Life a 3d immersive . as to RAM just normal usage.

i've decided its the RAM sockets as I am crashing in any position of 2 x 4 gigs. So buying a new machine. This one is over 5 years old so had my moneys worth. Getting another Dell :

i7-4770 3.9 Ghz,
16 gigs of 1600 RAM
2 terabyte HDD with 32 gigs SST
AMD Radeon HD R9 270 2GB GDDR5

hows that?
