Hi Tom’s Hardware Community,

I’ve encountered a problem with my Windows 7 professional 64bit operating system.

I purchased the digital copy from the Microsoft website and installed it on my brand new rig around the end of September.

A few days ago, I turned on my pc and after logging in, was greeted with a black screen and a message box telling me that I had not activated my software and that it was not genuine. I then followed the on-screen instructions which told me to re-enter my product key. After doing this, I was told that my software still couldn’t be validated.

What should I do? The software was definitely genuine, furthermore purchased from the Microsoft website itself. I have no clue why it has stopped working.

Thanks in advance for all help!!!!

P.S: If it is any help, in the corner of my screen it says:

Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine

Solution
When you go through the activation screen, instead of choosing "Connect to the internet to validate" choose the option to call a phone number.

It will have you read a bunch of boxes into the system, then it will give you another code to type in. It should then validate successfully.

Solution

+1. Excellent answer.

Follow exactly how the key is printed or displayed.

If letters are in Caps they must be caps.
Often mistakes between a 0 and an O are made.
Include the dashes when entering the licence key.
Make sure your computer is connected to the internet or it cannot be validated by the windows reg server.
