windows 8,1 computer problems

Windows 8.1 computer has no ethernet noted, no souind showing and apps don't work. Can't even change pc settings.

Did you install your motherboards drivers? these would inlcude chipset, network, audio, usb...

Sorry didn't get to finish up the question last night. I've been using that computer for a couple of years. For the last few days the apps started not working, can't even use change pc settings or system restore. I've scanned it with Avast(found a couple things, but nothing that I've not dealt with before, malabytes found nothing, superantispyware found a few things as did spybot search and destroy. Got into safe mode and scanned again, but keep forgetting Avast won't scan in safe mode. After a windows update yesterday which the computer had to restart the sound and ethernet won't work. i've run chkdsk to see if any problems with the drive that it could fix. Still nothing works, also it has be becoming slow to load, this started after the update.
