I know my modem is compatibble because it ddidn't start giving me the problem until i used a program called uxpatcher, eversince then I can't use internet on my computer.

Solution
I had the same problem.
The Network is not working because the Network driver is not compatible with Windows 8.1
I did this to get it to Work:
1: Rightclick the startmenu and click Device Manager
2: Search for something like Network.
3: Rightclick the driver inside the topic
4: Click on Update Driver
5: Click Search for updates online

Windows will now install the lastest update for your Network driver.
After it said Complete close Down the Device Manager
Now restart your computer. Then it should Work:)

Solution

As it won't connect item 5 should be search on this PC/laptop. Mine found a driver and when re-installed it worked so overall the solution is good.

This worked on my two Acer Aspires:
1. Hit the Windows button
2. Type in "Device Manager"
3. Select Device Manager
4. Click on to expand 'Network Adapters'
5. Right-click on Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter
6. Select 'Update Driver Software'
7. Select 'Browse my computer for driver software'
8. Select 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
9. Select 'Broadcome 802.11n Network Adapter (Broadcom)' - note NOT (Microsoft)
10. Select 'Next'
11. When done, select 'Close'

What do you do when your computer isn't connecting to the internet to look for the latest update?

I had a similar issue when my windows 8 gateway pc updated itself with windows 8.1. It would not let me connect wirelessly to my husbands wireless network here in the UK and there is nothing wrong with our router or internet so I thought it could be my Broadcom 802.11n network adapter. So what I did was I went to device manager under network devices and tried to roll it back did not work, tried to update it still not working. So I uninstalled it and restarted my laptop then went to my recovery manager thing and it let me reinstall drivers and apps so I reinstalled my wireless LAN driver and now I can connect wirelessly to my husbands wifi. Do not uninstall a driver unless you recovery manage will let u reinstall drivers and apps

it work thank you i have acer aspire to😀
