"the enthusiast crowd is pretty adaptable"....i adopt Vista and Win 7 on day 1. I install my PC with multiple Windows OS, Hackintosh and Ubuntu in one PC. ..."Enthuasiast" enough for you?? I got news. Hate Win 8. Piece of shitty tablet OS on a dekstop. I'll pass.

That quote is about the enthusiast's ability to adapt, not their willingness.

Which is to say, if you're an enthusiast I'm sure you would figure out how to use it if you wanted to.

Whether or not you want to is a separate issue, obviously.

Which is fine with us, because we aren't concerned with the OS our readers choose. Our only concern is relaying the info, it's up to you what to do with it...

It'll be a while before 7 becomes obsolete, seeing that they just stopped supporting Win XP about a month ago... I'm not that impressed with Windows 8 from what I've seen first hand. It may work better for tablets. Otherwise, there's no way I'd switch for 8, it just looks like app vomit.

This article focuses on gaming. We have other articles written and in the works that look at other parts of Windows 8

I don't know why the Radeon HD 7850 used in this benchmark only had 1GB of memory while there is a 2GB version. Also the GeForce GTX 660 has 2GB of memory, so I think it would have been a better match up to have used the 2GB version of the 7850 and see how well it does in Windows 8.

Because the 1 GB version is cheaper, and is the best bang for the buck.

You guys are forgetting one huge thing about Windows 8, the Touch interface. When games start using it more, youll have to upgrade, Muhahah, Microsoft got you!

[citation][nom]wildkitten[/nom]The main concern over Win8 is the question that is still unresolved...what is MS's approach to their Windows Store going to be. If they intend to try to close off outside development, well, it will kill Windows. What they need to do is come out and answer the question one way or another or else Win8 may very flop to begin with.I'm still confused about the interface and UI. Some articles say MS is trying to make it hard to have a classic desktop yet I've seen articles with screenshots showing a very Windows 7 like desktop.[/citation]

They are not closing the store off to outside development. Any developer can submit their application to be sold in the Windows Store. Your application will need to go through an approval process. It's similar to what Apple is doing with their iOS store.

People seem to think thay Microsoft is locking out other companies, and this is simply not true. I'm sure you've seen articles about how Valve is upset about the Windows Store and is developing their Steam distribution model to work on Linux now. To me, Valve is just complaining about their being more competition. Steam works on Windows 8, just the same as it worked on previous versions of Windows. I see no issue here.

I'm surprised Battlefield 3 wasn't tested!

I absolutely can't get Punkbuster to work with Win8. I tried all of the fixes, and was able to get some of the error messages to stop appearing, but I still get the one that says you have software/drivers installed that it doesn't like... LAME!

I was told that the only reason there was even any difference at all was because the win7 wasn't a fresh install and the win8 was? Could this be true? Someone else was claiming they did the same thing with 6 games and they were at with in 1-3 Fps and he got 3 vs 3 ratio so in the end it really doesn't matter though. In my own opinion i have used them both and like them both but will never go win8 on my gaming rig or desktop windows 8 should be on touch phones and touch laptops I'm not a big fan of touch desktops at all so guess unless win8 gets some patches, ill be using win7 until I'm forced to upgrade too win8 (Like new games no longer support win7) witch i hope doesn't happen any time soon even then ill duel boot and only use win8 when i have too play that game that needs it only 🙂

I see improvements on Windows 8 but then we try to run older games like Call of Duty 2 and they just can't run properly. Bulls***!

I don't think Win8 in itself is the root of the problem, that has Valve going promoting Linux for PC-gaming.
The problem is that PC-gaming, or at least old PC-gaming, with its paradigms and game-models, has a big enemy in Microsoft.
Microsoft has dropped the ball. They want all videogaming to be console style, with console paradigms. This is because they want to favor their XBox, at the expense of PC-gaming. If PC-gaming is to exist at all, it should play exacty as console games. This is the situation we have today and it has been driven hard by MS to this point. More capable and sophisticated games, running on more capable platforms, are not to exist. That is MS foolish agenda. Foolish because it will in the end cost them what they are dependent on, - the Windows market.

The only way to break out of MS strangle-hold on PC gaming, is to move it to a new platform. Linux is the obvious choice, since it's the most mature and adopted alternative.

[citation][nom]blazorthon[/nom]Ehh, Vista compared to 7 may be an outlier there[/citation]

Nah, Vista64P SP2, fully maintained, is better than W7. 😉

"What about Gabe Newell's statement that 'I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space'"?

google "steam problem" you may crash google with all the results. Gabe Newell is a joke, valve software is shit imo.

But Windows 7 boots pretty fast with a 7200rpm laptop HDD too. That's quite affordable if you ask me, and once you boot your system, you are just fine. You won't reboot all day. Heck, I reboot my laptop every once in a while. (A week at most, when the patches come.)

That said, I don't think the tradeoff worth it. (Faster bootup vs. better productivity.)

Start > Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > adjust visual effects > adjust for best performance

When playing a game ALT+TAB out then put up task manager > applications >right click game > go to process > right click process > set priority to high

Instant noticeable frame rate boosts, there that will make up for the small increase Windows 8 has been getting 🙂!

till now i concluded myself with win8 is faster starts & close. at this point, win8 is a big bug. win8 cant force to initiate IT revolution with divide & rule policy in softwares invironment :) Why win8??? better wait for win9/win10 hehe....

What if you do the same on Windows 8?
