I'm absolutely certain that there is a simple answer to this question, but
have been watching the newsgroups for a couple of weeks and haven't seen it
come up.

In the right-hand pane of my old Windows Explorer (Win ME), I could view a
thumbnail of a selected file to the left of the Details list of files.
This really came in handy on graphics files. I recall that there was a
setting for this, and I believe it was under Tools --> Folder Options --
but I see no options in Windows Explorer on My XP Home Edition that would
allow me to do this.

I'm aware of the Thumbnails option under "View", but what I'm looking for
is the DETAILS View with a thumbnail that shows up to the left of the list
when I highlight the file in question.

Using Folder Options, enable the common tasks pane. When tasks are
displayed, the image preview is at the bottom of that column. If I remember
correctly, that field was initially collapsed. I had to click the arrow to
extend the area so that it would show the image. Don't remember if it's
necessary but I use the "remember settings for each folder" so that a
folder is always displayed using per folder viewing adjustments .

In Folder Options on the General Tab there is a section labelled Tasks
Select Show Common Tasks in folders.

Now view an explorer window, without the folder list and it will show a pane
of data down the left side.
On of the sections is labelled Details, expand this.
This will show previews of graphic files.

Okay, I selected the Show Common Tasks thing and I see the Details
expansion preview of the files. That's a start. But isn't there a way to
view it like I did in earlier versions of windows, without having to close
down the left hand pane?

If you do not have a Folders button on the Standard toolbar, add one. It's
a quick way to toggle between the folder view (single pane) and explorer
view (two panes). Not exactly what you asked for but hopefully and
acceptable workaround.

To add the button, right click on the toolbar and select Customize. Use the
screen that appears to add the button to the toolbar.

Got it. That'll make it MUCH easier. I was having to close down Explorer
and open it back up to get the left-hand pane back up! 🙂

Not that I am aware of.
The old style webview seems to have been replaced.
