I have a little problem here. I want to switch over to linux. Still investigating different distros. But the problem is that, I need to run certain Windows software on linux but most of it doesn't support linux. Software that I need to run on linux is autocad, photoshop. I need this exact software I cant use anything else. So s it possible to run windows software on linux.

Solution
I think there should be Linux programs near the same as them and have several to choose from look around this site

http://sourceforge.net/directory/development/data-formats/autocaddxf/os:linux/freshness:recently-updated/

heres what this guy said

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=129719&f=190

when you got Linux up and going theres a software/ program manager that lists all the stuff to try and use I think you can look some over here
http://community.linuxmint.com/software

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/linux_software_picks_six_alternatives_photoshop

then you got this to try
https://www.winehq.org/
Hope you know what you are doing.. check out wine
https://www.winehq.org/
Why would you want to move away when your core need seems to be closely tied to Windows?
You sure you doing the right thing? it cant be cost.. when you consider cost of windows compared to the software you need.

Anyway.. like I say.. hope you know what you doing
HTH
Cheers

I have a separate box for Linux (an old XP box.. prob not enough grunt for Win 7 or above,, so thought I would set up a Linux install)..running fedora 20... but TBH.. not sure why I bother.. I seem have more software options in windows.. and software seems be more fully featured... and stable..
I can get more free stuff in Linux. but it seems less featured.. and more flakey, so always seems let me down in one way or another.
So I just seem gravitate back to windows....ill keep trying :)
Other opinions are available.

Cheers

as long as money is involved the bill gates way right??

''less featured.. and more flakey''--- open source = you make the mod's you need for it and build on what you got to start with -- this goes back to plug and play in windows and a mod is a hack and that don't wash with Microsoft software -- so if you can only do as much as point and click then Linux is not for you

Look at a program called Crossover at https://www.codeweavers.com/products/ They have a 14 day trial, it is wine, but easier to install.

Or may be I just have better things to do with my time.. and prefer things to work and do what I want.. rather than have to "open source = you make the mod's you need for it and build on what you got to start with"?
Really - I have an open mind.. so will keep trying.. try and keep an open mind yourself..

''Really - I have an open mind.. so will keep trying.. try and keep an open mind yourself..''

what??? what are you really trying to say?? your not smart or to lazy to make any effort?? its not like a life project or brain surgery-- lets fase it windows is for the lazy that can only do point and click and that's there extent of there knowledge and if you were to do any thing like you can with Linux for a windows/Microsoft program then your subject to a lawsuit ..

until he gets linus and trys all the programs available to him that he may need to do his work he will never know if it will fit his needs or not

like with mint all these programs to chose from and try -- for free -- now put that windows licensed pay for it prices on all of them

<sigh>... are you deliberately being obtuse?
Part of being open minded is having the wit and intelligence to see other perspectives.. you appear to be falling woefully short.
Perhaps it has escaped your notice..but there is lots of free alternatives to all the applications/groups you have flagged up, for windows (probably more numerous as well)...
But get back to the OP.. who states he/she NEEDS run specific software that requires windows.. so it is really crazy to ask if it makes sense to go to Linux in that scenario? If you have time to spare.. it can be fun to find and fix the little foibles that you may encounter by going that route.. but if you need to be productive 100% of the time.. you must ask the question..
So back off a bit... and recognise that perhaps the windows route is the better option for some people.... The cheap shot from you along the lines of "Windows is only for stupid people who cant do anything but click" is just a crass comment.
The link to the quote in may last post is perfect for zealots ..... and remember.. I didn't say "don't" to the OP.. I just said to take care..
And here is another quote for you "There are none so blind as those that will not see"
And if you don't have the wit or intelligence to work how that might apply to this "discussion".. there is no hope.

Cheers.

You could always just keep Windows installed for the programs you need and just dual-boot. I like to play games a lot, so I go on Windows for that and a couple of other things. But otherwise I can spend most of my time on Linux, with Windows just sitting there collecting virtual dust until I need it again.

who states he/she NEEDS run specific software that requires windows---

well silly boy how does he know that??? being that's closed minded right off .. unless he has tried all the Linux versions of that type programs he don't know that to be fact nor do you .. sad thing is with windows you pay to see each time with Linux it don't cost you nothing but a little time to install it and see and what I just showed is from one of many distro's to look at and try and not cost him a dime to do so

''If you have time to spare.. it can be fun to find and fix the little foibles that you may encounter by going that route.. but if you need to be productive 100% of the time.. you must ask the question..[this is the stupidest thing you have said so far]
and then what program of windows is !00% all the patches updates security leakes and on and on then programs that worked with xp vista but don't with 7 or 8?? now what your back BUYING software for windows duaaa.. did I not already have windows software???? that's right it now not supported anymore but for $100 we got the one that now will.. lol

all you show is how limited you are

err.. he does !!!
"But the problem is that, I need to run certain Windows software on linux but most of it doesn't support linux. Software that I need to run on linux is autocad, photoshop. I need this exact software I cant use anything else."

So if he goes Linux.. he forced on relying on something to make it compatible..

But lets end this.. I think I will end with one more quote.. and then I am done with you..
"What you say about me, says more about you, than it does of me"
Cheers :)
