I am running Windows 8.1 64bit. I've recently run into the problem that windows update will never actually update anything. The windows 10 update window is still on my computer, and my friends told me that ended during summer. Whenever I go to the windows update tab and attempt to update, If I try to update in the Windows Update tab, it gives a progress bar that says "Downloading windows 10" then it changes to "Preparing to install..." and it goes on forever. Nothing happens when I restart/shutdown my computer.

Is there a program that you could recommend me to download windows updates? I'm convinced my system isn't even detecting new updates, because the only updates that have shown up were for Windows Defender.

Any help is appreciated :^)

Solution
install gwx control panel http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ and have it remove the win 10 update files and stop the nag screen from coming back.

once this is done, then try running win update again and see what happens. if that does not work then try the win 8.1 roll-up update https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172614 should catch it up enough to overcome the current issues your having

This seems to have worked, so thank you very much. One question, though, will gwx control panel run in the background of my PC for the rest of it's life? Or can I just uninstall it?
