Windows Vista locks up or crashes to blue screen after closing certain programs

I had no problems at all before, but over the past day, Windows has started either locking up (cursor will become unresponsive and might jerkily move the tiniest bit every minute or more, while keyboard actions have no effect) or crashing to blue screen.

It tends to happen whenever closing certain programs, like VLC or Photoshop. All video drivers are up to date, as are the programs in question.

Does the even viewer show anything strange at these times?

What are the full system specs?
Have you run any memory and hard drive tests(do not run hard drive tests on SSD's)
