Windows XP hangs when shutting down

When my dad's IBM Thiknkpad A31 (P4m 1.8Ghz, 512 Ram, XP home, everything (more or less) is updated, AVG does not find anything, nor do the usual Spyware scans, etc.) Shuts down, windows often hangs on the "windows is shutting down" page and does not react to anything. This happen when the comuter has been on for a long time but also when it was only on for a couple of minutes.

It also causes massive network access. This causes the network to "crash". Nobody can access it anymore, however when I pull the network plug, the Network is OK again.

Back to the comuter ... It doesn't react to anything anymore, it has to be manually reset (cutting energy supply). There does not semm to be any hard drive activity, If the CPU is working i cannot tell (the fan is always on)

Is there some sort of fix for this kind of problem??? Do I have to reinstall everythig/XP recovery/Recover with the CD that came along with the PC. It would be a real nuisance since my dad can never remember his e mail passwords, which makes setting up Office rather difficult.

If you start and then shut down in safe mode, does the same thing happen?

It doesnt happen always on shut down, so I have no idea. For the couple of times i booted into safe mode, everything went nicely, but that could be just coincedence, because as far as I can tell the problem only surfaces in avgerage 1/8 times. I thought it was maybe some sort of well known problem that could be fixed with a reg-tweak or something. If not ill just do a recovery, even though it is a nuisance, its not someting i wont get over. Too bad ...

Other thought: could it be that windows is not able to delete the page file on shutdown, because an active application is inside that should be shut down later in the process, is hindering the continuation of the shutdown. I think i enabled deleeting the pagefile on shutdown sometime. How do you turn that off again?

What, exactly, is accessed on your network? Watch your router, then find the machine, then run TCPVIEW (from www.sysinternals.com) on that machine, and figure out what's being accessed.

If you enabled deleting the pagefile on shutdown, that's a registry entry; the same place that showed how to enable it should show how to disable it; Google will help with that.

I suggest running MSCONFIG and disabling services (start by disabling *everything* and seeing if you can still repro the problem). Keep all MS services running.

It's also highly likely this is a filter driver issue. If MSConfig doesn't fix it up, let us know and we can look at your filter drivers.

The weird thing is that nothing is accesed on the network. The light on the router for the computer blinks like crazy (like in a file transfer), but everything else is not accesed (like my computers or the internet) (the lights all are solid on (for other computers), or off (for internet)).

The funny thing is that is somehow manages to cut the other user off the network (windows tells me that the other computers have "bad connectivity" (i thing thats what it called in the US versions (in the German version ist says "eingeschränkte Konnectivität)))

OK: told my dad how to swich the deleting of the pagefile on shutdown off. Hope that fixes it. If not ill try the services thing.

Ok my dad swiched the deetion of the pagefile on shutdown off. It seems that this fixed it (10 consecutive shutdowns with no problems). If it didnt ill just do a reinstall. Going though the services is just too much of a hassle. Anyhow doing a reinstall will get rid of all bugs & malware. He doesnt have a lot of software on it (just office, firefox & Antivirus, AdAware & co.). I should be throught that in 1 hour (way less time than i need for finding the bad service).

(I made a backup of his files on Th. because the gfx card seemed to have a problem - turned out that it was my moms "unholy" fingers that brought the machine down to its knees. I wont let her touch my computers because everything electric that she touches misfunctions - even the sat. reciver)
