I have an older machine that I am not ready to give up on yet. It is a
Pentium MMX 166 mhz and I want to run Windows XP on it. MS states the
minimum to be a 233 mhz machine, any idea if this will work.
Thanks.

Windows XP license will probably cost more than the current value of the PC.
You can try it for yourself but I doubt that you can get any help from here.
You already stated that MS require 233MHz. Memory requirement must also be
considered.

Sorry, your old computer's hardware is wholly inadequate to
install and run Windows XP even "marginally". I would suggest
using it's currently installed operating system.

If you manage to get XP installed and running, once you try to DO
anything on it, you'll be ready to 'give up on' it (the PC, that is).

The amount of memory you can put in these old machines is apt
to me a real limitation. 64MB doesn;t cut it.

YES, it will work. I have managed to install XP on a 133 MHz computer
with 64 MB (or 128 MB, can't remember how much memory) of memory. It
will install, it will just take a very very long time to do anything.
For that computer, I would suggest sticking with Windows 95 (98 will
probably still run slow on that computer, but if you have it try and see
if 98 Second Edition runs as well as 95).

You just have to stick with what your computer runs best. If you really
want XP, buy a new computer. Dell makes some really nice computers for
under $400 which include Windows XP.

That is exactly the case. You can install it, it just won't run well.
It will take about 10 minutes to boot up, another 5 to load all of your
programs and stuff, then a minute or two for anything else you open.

Hi..I tried both win2000 prof and winxp prof. after overclocking the processor from 166 to 250MHz.

It will take too much time to install but finally installed successfully. And return the processor to pervious state.

WinXP is too slow to open any files, videos, audios etc
Win200prof is little much better, but videos are very slow, especially AVIs.

try your luck.
