Yesterday i decided to format my C: drive wich contain windows XP and make a
fresh install since i was starting to have big drivers problems after failing
to installe a really old piece of hardware.

I did something pretty daring wich mean i didnt unplug my other 3 hrad
drives i usually have on this computer.

So i went and formatted my C and procedded to reinstall windows on it. I was
extremely surprised when windows detected "corruption on my other drives when
i never asked him to do anything with them. So this piece of garbage
procedded (without ever asking me) to "repair" them the results was easy to
see coming now around 93% of the files on these 2 drives are corrupted

Is there so kind of way to undo the "fixing" that this piece of garbage did.

|Also could someone explain to me why it decided to check these drives that
had nothing to do with the reinstallation without ever allowing me to prevent
it

Is its of any interest my 2 destroyed HD were WD 250gb while my maxtor 120gb
never got fixed.

I can now sadly say that windows is the most efficient virus I have ever met

You've got to be trolling to post a story like that. I work with hundreds
of computers each month, many of them with 2 to 4 hard drives and have
installed XP many times on systems with 2 to 4 hard drives. Not once has
XP detected corruption where there wasn't really corruption. At the same
time XP ignored testing of the non-FAT/NFTS file systems, so it can't be
that in your case.

If you're not a troll, then you might want to repost in a polite manner or
you're likely to not get any help from anyone here.

As a note, I have multiple WD IDE/SATA drives in the 160-250GB range and
am experiencing many drive failures, these faults have NOTHING to do with
XP as the fault rate is the same on non-Win based systems - just something
you might want to know.

sorry about treating windows like a pile of junk but i was really pissed when
i saw that, so i have over-reacted. But no this is not trolling. I have no
idea on how in the world this could have happened.

All i can say is that having 2 hard drives that seemed perfectly fine and
where the files were CRC checked and worked. then i reinstalled windows on my
maxtor 15 gb HD and after this most of my files on my 2 Western Digital
drives were not working and the CRC checks were wrong on a ration of about
93% (rough estimation) I CRC checked all i had a CRc check of (about 400
gb)(of course i didnt use the CRC on my computers since they might be
corrupted themselves) and this ratio is about right.

The only thing i know is that my Maxtor drive went untouched and the 2
Western digital drives 250 gb suffered the same fate (they were bought about
1 year apart from each other)

the most recent one is about 4 months old.

As for my drives both breaking at the same time when i was formatting my C
drive (a maxtor 15gb) I have a hard time believing that.

I also checked my computer for any virus infection but there was nothing. I
also use kerio firewall so normally im rather safe from these kind of
problems.

i just found out than while my second hard drive was heavily hit as well it
got away with way less corruption then the first one.

But even if both of my drives were slowly dying why would a windows
reinstallation on an other drive be the blow needed to go from unnotticable
to absolute corruption. Also lets note that the file structure survived
perfectly. 9at least i didnt notice any folders missing)

Actually, this scenario is possible if a drive overlay is
being used for the "large" hard drives. I am more inclined
to believe so since the OP's Drive C was a Maxtor 15 GB, and
might point to a dated motherboard and/or system bios.

more info:

seem like my newest WD drive got less corrupted then the first one. but it
is still quite corrupted just less.

well i found out why windows destroyed my 2 250 gb hard drive. Windows XP
cant understand partitions of over 128 gb and of course all files that were
partially on the part that windows was not able to understand were detected
as "broken" and "fixed".

lets note thought that when i installed SP1 it "fixed" even more stuff.

So yes if you have windows XP and a drive over 128 unplug them before
installing windows because windows will destroy everything before you have
the time to install the fix needed to make them work properly.

So is there some kind of way left for me to maybe get some of this data
back. lets note that i didnt write anything on one of them so it should help
a bit.

This is from an earlier post here:

Are there any *free* software for file recovery?
Sure! Here's two:
Drive Rescue
PC Inspector File Recovery

The rule of thumb is don't let the operating system chkdsk large (>
137GB) drives if said operating system is not set up to properly
access large drives. For Windows XP, this requires that SP1 or SP2 be
installed.

What you can try is install SP1 or SP2, so the OS properly access
large drives. Then run chkdsk.
This did happen to me once, but I did not let chkdsk finish. I just
hit the reset button and dual booted another Windows installation that
could access large drives. I noticed that about half of the folders
were missing from the drive. I ran chkdsk and it restored everything.

You have to watch the screen during bootup. You do have the
opportunity to abort autochk.
