Crash, honestly that has not been my experience, 98se outperforms xp by a hair. What was the configuration of the system you ran xp on.

98SE outperforms XP. Flat out. XP looks faster because it caches frequently used programs so they START faster, but the same thing that makes them START faster makes them RUN slower do to overhead!
Not if you have enough RAM. 512MB RAM is the sweet spot for multitasking in Windows XP. Well, it's really unrelated to hardware. There are hardware problems and then there are software problems. Even if you have perfect hardware, Windows can still crash. In Windows XP you have unlimited resources, so you can open as many programs as you want without crashing Windows. Also, in Windows XP, if a buggy program crashes, it won't crash your entire system, like it sometimes happens in Windows 98SE. However, if Windows crashes due to a bug, that's another matter.

Crashman, you're not seeing the whole picture. As a programming hobbyist, I can tell you that a crash can have nothing to do with your hardware.

Yeah, I set up xp on many systems, making myself a pirate in the process heh, anyways, none of the systems has crashed ONCE, and they run the gambit from p3 550 to a 1.5ghz tbird with a via southbridge and sblive card. I am telling you xp is stable as hell.

XP is great. I have the Pro version, which DOES require activation, and it's flawless so far. Not a single crash in over a month.

So far only beta testers have been the big critics. I can't exactly take people using the devilsown pirated version or a beta version seriously since that's not the final release. Read the reviews and ask people who bought the OS what they think.

As far as software piracy, you can pirate the retail version if you want using a 13 MB file replacement crack (from the corporate version). I don't have faith in the devilsown version.

I've got the corporate version for free(work for about 8 school systems, its worth it to keep me educated on new OS's).
in order, best to worst
Win2k
WinXP
WinNT
Win98
Win98SE
WinME
Win95

the only reason I give XP over NT is due to the fact that NT doesn't support 90% of the games I play. no DX, no DOS...
for a work system, its a helluvalot better than XP, imo...

Final version of what? Is it the corporate dell version that has leaked, or is it a patched version? I'm almost dead positive that the corpfiles crack replaces the version number of whatever you crack, so if you crack something before 2600 it'll show you 2600 after the crack. I know that the crack works on the beta versions as well as final releases.

It's impossible to have faith in that version considering that we can't be sure how the version was made. I stick to what I know works. Unless you know you have a corporate version, or you know you have a home or pro version that you personally cracked, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot stick.

Granted, The devils own version might be a good version, and the crack might not replace version numbers, but until I know that for certain I wouldn't recommend it.

Where are all this recommendations of lots of ram coming from? I run XP on a system that has 256 mb of memory. I also disabled all that services thats not necessary, and have a system that takes ~60 megs for a startup. I also disabled the swap file completly. Has no problemos what so ever and think the response times is as good as in w2k...

Which services can go? I've disabled the one for Nvidia, but that's it. What else?

256MB and it's really slow with lots of open windows, so I'm upgrading to 1GB RAM.

I've been testing XP at work for compatibility with all our client's software. So far, i'd have to agree with you. Win2k with cartoon desktop. Overall though, XP is not bad at all.

Interface qualms shouldn't even be voiced. Its completely customizable. It does have a classic view too you know, so you can make it look like win2k.

no, but when you hear all the time "xp rules", "xp is the best os", etc, etc, etc. all i'm saying is other than ms's poor attempt at an OSX look-a-like there is nothing superior to w2k. and for me personally, created more problems that were non-existant in w2k.

Right now I m trying to find out which ram would be good. Which DDR. PC2100 or 1600. It looks to me pc 1600 higher price. Which would tell me it better but I want to make sure. For I m going to buy 3 512 megs of ram. Or two 1 gig of ram.

Its not that I need all the ram. its just in a spot where I Use %60 of my pc133 768 megs. And when I move to the Window XP Pro. I want to be able to use both my Montiors. And just want to have spare ram.

System is amd athlon 1.53 1800 dual video card dual monitors sound blaster live and Ati TV card and cable Modem and Reg modem.

My 2 cents...

I have installed XP alot now and the activation doesnt bother me at all.

WinXP is a pretty version on Win2k and the compatability mode works great.

It loaded perfectly first time, and detected all my components (god I love owning a Intel based machine). not a single crash yet so I not seen a BSOD or whatever its called now in XP.

I ordered my pro copy from newegg.com for 150 bucks. you gotta order something (anything hardware) to get that deal (check refurb stuff w/ free shiping).

P4T loaded perfect

P4B had a easy fix driver problem with .inf file. had to extract by running setup -s

AZZA P4X266 w/ Voice error report (new) had to install driver from CD after OS loaded.

I also just got win XP but i got the Home Edition. I got it for $100 from staples and got the digital camera package. For my it has been completely since i loaded it on saturday afternoon. Hasn't crashed once. Hmm... Fugger i have an AMD system with a VIA chipset and didn't have any trouble with XP. XP in my opinion is awesome and i'll never go back.
