hello,
if i was to get a copy of windows xp....will it work without internet?
or do i HAVE to connect to microsoft and send them information, and let them scan my computer for pirated software....
i dont know if i want them to be able to control what operating system i use based on the fact that i might have a cracked version of some program, or a nice collection of mp3's.
anyone know anything about the registration thing?
if you ask me..then i think that this is a pretty stupid move by microsoft.

I have a legal copy of XP, but I was playing with their registration thing tonight:

Legally, you can either register by the internet (fast, 2 seconds), or by phone I believe. It might take a few minutes more then.

Illegally there are cracks that bypass the whole hardware hashing thing. There was a corporate copy running around the net and it doesn't require any registration, only the product key like before. I believe this is to make the installation more friendly to the big businesses. Either way the 17 MB crack has been around for weeks.

The hardware hashing by microsoft is stupid, but it will probably be very effective for the average joe burning his buddies WinXP cd.

Either way, I have a legit copy and really like it. I'd honestly say it's worth buying rather than worrying about illegal copies. I've been assured by Microsoft that a number of hardware changes can be made without having to contact them.

a number of hardware changes.....but then what happens after a while..
do they just have you tell them what you did?
it is like they are in charge of computers or something....
and how much does windows xp cost?
like if i was to buy it..
and does the same thing go for office xp?
do you have to do the same online or phone registration?
and also...sorry so many questions...but which is it more like....windows me, windows 98se, or windows 2000?
i am guessing by what i have read..that it is like 2000 and 98se mixed together in a "user friendly" setting...
you seem to like it...so what would you say?

ok, lets say i do buy it, can i install it on more than one system like i can with 98se
i have a retail copy of that, and i can install on all of my systems without any problems..
i think that it would really suck that if i wanted to upgrade all my computers to xp, i would have to buy 5 copies of it!!!!!!!!
that would be a waste of money...when i could just stick with 98se, and buy a whole friggin computer...
i think that this whole thing seems like too much trouble...maybe i will just stick with 98se for now..
especially since i dont want to have to deal with the cost of upgrading all of my computers to xp...
and maybe i wont have to, but i am picky, and like to have all the computers on my network running pretty much the same os...
except for maybe when i make a file server (the near future) and put 2000 on it, in terminal server mode..
then it can be a file server...

well if you are installing win98/2k or whatever on several pc's you should by rights stil be paying for the apropriate liscense, i.e. 1 per pc. Im sure we ALL do that :)

LoL, not very honest john.

That is piracy, the reason xp has all its newfangled protection crap.
