Hello,
I bought a Compaq computer running Windows XP (home ed.)
about two and a half years ago. It has been a really
stable, reliable machine, with no major problems at all -
until now!
About 4 months ago, the computer had a phase of random
reboots, which I could not explain as I had up to date
Norton security software etc, yet the issue was rather
minor and did not seem too problematic. Then, about a
month ago, I switched on the computer to find an error
message saying that Windows failed to load properly,
perhaps due to a problem arising from recent
software/hardware installations - I had not installed
anything. After phoning an expensive helpline, I was told
to use my recovery disc, which I did.
Once reinstalled, the computer now ran Windows XP, as
well as a printer, and Norton Internet Security 2004. All
software/hardware installations went without any hitches
at all. However, about 2 weeks later, as I was browsing
the internet, the computer started to freeze momentarily
a few times, and then it crashed completly. It failed to
reboot after it crashed, and I was left with a black
screen and an error message saying that windows could not
start because a file was either missing, corrupted or
deleted. The file was:
/WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vgaoem.fon
Yesterday I used the recovery disc again to reinstall
windows, yet I would like to know more about this
problem. Does anyone have any thoughts on how this could
have happened? And what this file actually is? Any help
would be fantastic, thank you
GLA (apologies for long post)
