Well I just installed Windows XP RC1. I must say I am truly impressed. It boots in less than 1 minute. Not to mention about 1,000 new features. It is something like OS X meets Win2K and in a idiot proof box. If you have any questions about the O/S or know some new tricks for it I am open to suggestions or questions.

I've got a question:
How many numbers do you have to read off to the msft guy (on the telephone), and how many numbers does he have to read back to you for the 'product activation'?
 
If you have your modem plugged into the phone line, you have to do nothing like that, just click "OK" to let windows dial and complete the "number crunching" (and there will be no sarcasm in the activation thing at all :)

I couldnt stand the new XP start menu design. I had to go back to the classic layout. Same for the taskbar, i couldnt get it arranged like a wanted under the xp design. Reverted to the classic layout and dragged everthing into the layout I wanted and locked it back into place.

Screw overclocking my comps got <font color=red>NOS</font color=red>!!!!

Now, while that is wonderful, it does not address my question. Specifically, I was asking how many numbers/letters are involved over the phone with a msft individual for XP activation?
 
I used the RC1 Professional. Which means there is no activation code. That is the kewl thing about the pro versions of the software. My room-mate has RC1 for home use. And it is a 25+ Character number.

With a little bit of work I got everything the way I wanted it. I don't really mind tbe new start menu scheme. The over-sized fonts and limited explorer are really annoying though. And I hate that damn search dog. Have you checked out the Instant burner support yet? ISMAPI Service I think.

I've heard the employee has a 50 digit number to read back to you, but I'm wondering what kind 'o number you get off the computer to read to the employee? Is it 50 digits too?

Not in this life-time. Nor in any.....it is amazing how well software piracy works on something that is not piratable.

Oh, sori. Anyway, does it matter??? If you want that thing (XP) to work for you (basically activate it), I think it is a moot question, as you will do it no matter how many of those will pop up.

But as far as it goes there will 25 characters Product Key + the wizard (by phone) will show you the number to read to the employee, which will be around 20+ characters, heh. Based on those two you will get “activation” characters (around 25 as well), so some body here was right talking about giving them 50 digits on the phone, hehe

I do apologize for the bad link. it is http://www.theregister.co.uk they had a complete article on the activation code. which is based on the product key plus your hardware configuration. It is really neat. It comes from a German company who reversed engineered the entire program. Mucho kewl....they include they source on a the encryption key use.

I was implying that according to Microsoft this product can not be stolen or pirated. They are that sure of the activation code system. Ranks up there with the passport one login system. Which does not work yet. So crackers have already succeeded in making a program to make a Activation code with out a product key. go figure.....

LOL the crack for 1st was on the net shortly after (or was it before...) the release, its about as pirate proof as a teabag is waterproof. we got the final release here at work now and it was activated automatically via the modem, its also xp proffesional, so I dont know how Tathlin didnt need to activate, unless its different for different locations.Anyway I DONT LIKE it, it reminds me of AOL's interface, took me ages to find anything, WHY did they move stuff around?? mind you, it DOES seem stable, but I dont think I'll be buying it (or using it....)

RC1 of Professional changed a large amount of code. They don't require activation on PRO because imagine a business buying a block of 10,000 copies upgrading and then needing to activate each one. Not very practical. As for the over feel. Like I said it is like MacOSX meets 2K with and idiot proof wrapper. I prefer Slakware 8.0 to WinXPRC1 any day.

New trick dual boot RC1 with Slackware works very well. Or you can do it with Win2k

mind telling the trick. I really do beleive that this Windows XP will actually encourage piracy. I am sure more consumers will pur into teh black market lookin for a "better" version of XP. Plus wtf, I mean when one buys the product, it's theirs. It really shouldn't matter what u do with it afterwards.

In my honest opinion I agree. XP will encourage piracy in the fact they are trying to say it can't be done. As for the trick. Install Slackware first configure your lilo to boot off of the mbr of /dev/hda. If you have 2 drives disable the linux drive in bios. Install Windows then boot to linux partition. Log in as root and type liloconf. Reconfigure it with expert pass nothing to the kernel. It is not needed and then go from there. Write it then type lilo when your done configuring and reboot. Simple trick.
