I am going to be getting a PC soon, my internet is set up in a different room, about 30-40 feet away. I was thinking of running an Ethernet cable under the carpet and to my room, but I would probably ruin the carpet, also after a while of people stepping on it, most likely the wire will break. I was thinking of running it under the carpet and along side the wall, but I would need to rip up more of the carpet and need a bigger cable, so that would be the most difficult option. My next choice is to get a phone jack set up in my room, but they cost about $130 to install one and most likely my parents will make me pay for it since it is something that I want for my room. The PC I am getting is expensive already, so the $130 will make it harder to buy the computer and everything else for it. My final choice is using power line adapters, I know how they work, they are pretty simple to set up and they are cheaper than installing a phone jack, but take up more space, they need to use a whole outlet instead of sharing a power strip since it is not able to use it, it needs the whole outlet itself, and they are a bit slower than wired connection, but still faster than wireless, and I heard that people can connect to the internet from other houses. Which option should I go for, running an Ethernet cable under the rug, getting the phone jack in my room, or power line adapters, if there is another effective way that is still faster than wireless connection, or just installing a wireless adapter in the computer, but I really don't think that is a good idea since I will be downloading a lot of stuff and playing online games. Thank you to anyone who is able to help me out!

that depends on what your acceptable latencies are. A wire will offer the fastest connection with the lowest latency, next would be wireless slightly less speed slightly higher latency. Power line, from what I recall, is slower still with higher latency. latency is important if your gaming. You could also attach the cable to the baseboard, there are clips, basically a little nail with a plastic cable holder, available that can help with the running of the cable. This would decrease wear from foot traffic. cat 5 allows for a farther cable run than what you describe.

I think I could probably use those clips you mentioned to run the wire over the doors so they are out of the way, but our wall is painted a light brown color, do you know if there is a wire that color? Also, could you please give me a link to those clips you mentioned?

one problem I saw when I looked where my internet is set up is that sometimes the door in that room is closed and since the wire is going to my room, when I am on it at night I close my door so I don't wake anyone up, will the wire still be ok if it is ran under and between two closed doors?

for you use a powerline adapter, unless u want 40-50ft of cable running around, i find no difference between powerline and ethernet,

wat is powerline?

powerline turns your house in to a ethernet cord................

that simple
