As I said before, and as he seems to agree with, wording aside, the VRAM itself is never actually pre-allocated. What is pre-allocated is the system RAM in which the video data is stored prior to transfer to the memory on the discrete card. This also might be the reason it is difficult to measure, as I guess there aren't any tools to measure video card memory use directly. I was wrong about the measurements in the article, though.

Regardless, it seems the max memory usage averages 5.4GB, regardless of available memory. The game isn't asking for more memory from the 8GB cards than from the 6GB cards, so his explanation fails on that point here.

Because it *is* asking for ~5.4GB, It's reasonable to assume that at some point, however fleeting, it may use that amount of memory, and cards with less than that will suffer some kind of performance hit. It is also reasonable to surmise memory may be an issue because there is a bigger performance delta between the 3GB and 6GB 1060's here than you normally see between the two cards.
