I am looking for workstation graphics card recommendations. I have a stock trading station and need better display performance (no gaming). Below is a list of questions I've thought of and my setup. Note that although connecting directly to the card would be nice, I already use HDMI-USB3 4k adapters, that work really well. Thanks in advance.

I have seen the NVIDIA Quatro and the AMD FirePro.

  1. Based on my setup, how much RAM should my new card have?
  2. Can this be a 3rd card in my system, or should I replace my existing discrete GC?
  3. What would be enough performance and not overkill?

My setup (Windows 10 PC with 6x connected displays):
CPU: i7-8700
RAM: 32GB
Mobo: GIGABYTE Z370 HD3P
Primary GS (discrete): GIGABYTE AMD Radeon RX 550 (2GB RAM)
Primary Display: 43" Sharp TV (connected via HDMI to primary GC)
1x 24" Display: Connected via HDMI to internal Intel 630 Graphics
4x 23" IPS Displays: Connected via HDMI-USB3 4K adapters

ok workstation no gaming and 4k ezy go with the titan rtx smooth af for any top of the top 1 percentish workstations for all the people who want to be productive and not much gaming but hey its a FANTASTIC card if you'ld want to game you'ld already be blowing the competition out of the water so go with the titan rtx or get 2 of these ABSOLUTE DESTRUCTION MACHINES but in all seriousness its a great card if ur running 6 displays id get 2 for heavy multitasking workloads but it comes with a steep price of 2500 id still go for it i promise u you wont regret it

That GC is certainly impressive, though at twice my system cost...wow. How do I determine what is excessive and what I can get by with, i.e. RAM, speed, etc? For example, I've seen other cards with 6-8 GB RAM. Yes, they are slower than the Titan, but are those cards not going to provide me performance significantly beyond what I already have?

pk mbe that was a bit overkill so other top of the line cards are the rtx 2080 with a baseline of 700$vbtw u havnt specified ur current gpu so i cant say for sure whats better 4 u so just comment ur current gpu and ill scatter around to check wut is best 4 u any budget u got too would also be helpful thx

i got just the thing 4 u u coild go with the rtx 2070 or 2060 rlly similar cards except rtx 2070 a bit better the 2060 is crazy cheap for poeple who are editors to content creation or vidieo editing in 4k so its gonna be a great boost to ur system but rtx 2060 if too out of ur budget then go with the 1660ti so cheap still has the truing architecture and baisicly a 2060 without rtx and can do 4k vids aswell if thats ur type of thing so u have many choices depending on how much u want to spend with all great outcomes to ur system u can sell the 550 to make some cash for this gpu or store it just a thought ur call glad i could help if u need more assistance dont be afraid to ask 😊

ps:u get gddr6 too with these cards

Actually, they do; it's how they are utilized. I've had lengthy conversations with the manufacturer of the ones I use (Startech).

That is not correct, they are basic video cards, no linked to other video cards in the system. Look in your Device Manager and also in your display properties, you will see them listed as separate video cards.

If you said you like the performance of the ones you have, why are you looking to change the setup?

The RX 550 is much faster than those USB adapters, and if you like how they function, changing the RX 550 card won't make you any happier.

I've downloaded/installed FurMark...to save time, some help on using this would be appreciated. I could not find any instructions @ geeks3d.

Disregard previous. I just had another conversation with Startech upper tier tech. As those have mentioned herein, the adapters basically use their own GPU. With that said, I would really like to still upgrade my main/discrete GC, as that's what I am seeing the most lag in.

What exactly is "better display performance"? In what way is your current setup not performing adequately?
In short, lagging. My charting is very choppy. My initial thought was that the multiple displays was diluting the graphics performance. As it turns out, seems maybe my GC is not strong enough for my connected TV alone.

So with only your TV connected you still have performance issues? An RX 550 should have no issue driving a single display for non gaming purposes, even a 4k one.

If that's the case I'm skeptical that your graphics card is the issue. What application/website do you use for charts? What is your internet speed, and is your computer wired or wireless? Are you using an HDD or SSD?

Charts: Thinkorswim
Platform: Sterling
WIFI; I get ever bit if my 150/150 speed
SSD: Samsung nvme 970

Note that I can stream a 4k video fullscreen w/o issue. This is why I was looking at a workstation GC.

Could be a matter of latency, which likely wouldn't affect video streaming. I'd try connecting via ethernet if at all possible just to see if that makes any difference.

Do you have any other devices that you can access thinkorswim from to compare charting performance?

Only a laptop. I'll try connecting Ethernet for a couple days to compare and report back. Thanks for the input.
Using wired Internet did not reduce the lagging I've been experiencing. Unless there's some crazy bottleneck at my router that I cannot work around, process of elimination, I'm back to something hardware/resources-related. When I either have only my Sterling Platform or TOS charts open, graphics are smoother and I noticed the amount of RAM used was considerably lower.

Although I do have charts running on my secondary displays, my main TOS and Sterling are both running on my main display (TV). In Windows, I specified both of these apps to run with the RX550 GC, not internal graphics.

My next test will be to close everything except Sterling, TOS, and my stock scanners. In addition to those, I have several browser windows open, VMWare running a couple VM's, and a few other apps running. I'll report back.

You are 95% looking at CPU/RAM issue not a video card issue. Would have been helpful to know you had all those things running on the system in the first post. Internet connection also will play a part. You can't check on system issues when you have a bunch of things running that are not related to the main program you are working on.
