Okay I did my City of Heroes characters on a blog and so I decided I might
as well do the WoW ones also (on a different blog). So here's a link if
you're interested. There's not many screenshots yet and I only describe my
two highest level toons so far. More will come.

And once again I'm struck by how goddamn UGLY the WoW graphics are. It
looks like a cutesy console platformer from yesteryears.

Like Rayman 3, actually.

Ok well they are definitely "cartoonish" that is the style of the artwork.

Ugly though? Not to me, not at ALL. I have really enjoyed the graphics of
this game quite a bit, there's times when I'm awed by it. However, the
screen shots I displayed do not do it justice. There are a lot better
screenshots online, of course, but you just do not get a feel for how good
the artwork is and how fluid the animations are until you see it in action
yourself.

It's no Rayman.

Okay. You must hate cartoons. I think the graphics look quite good. In
any case, you don't need a top of the line system to run the game,
unlike EQ2 (from what I hear).

I think the phrase you're looking for is "cutesy console platformer",
not "cartoonish".

I HAVE looked at those screenshots, even viewed video, and your
screenshots ARE representative. The game looks like that, like a
two-years-old console platformer.

Heck, even Rayman himself could just be dropped right into the WoW
world.

For me, yes, definitely. I hate cutesy console platformers.
For console kiddies, no. It's probably a selling point for them.

And I guess the console kiddie demographic is the target audience of
WoW. So what am I bitching about, huh?

I don't hate cartoons, and WoW looks nothing like cartoons. It looks
like a cutesy console platformer, and I do hate cutesy console
platformers.

Did you play Warcraft 3? I thought WoW did a fine job of translating the
art style of that game into an over-the-shoulder heroic perspective,
rather than a god's-eye-view perspective.

It's definitely an exaggerated cartoonish art style (although I wouldn't
have said "cutesy"), which will not be to everyone's taste, but so was
Warcraft 3.

Cheers!

I guess one could make that point, in that WC3 had bright colors, low
level of detail, and exaggerated models. However, WoW's been cutefied,
and in WC3 the exaggerated models made sense, as you otherwise
couldn't see what was going on, the models being basically scurrying
ants on the screen.

True, the exaggerated models are not necessary in WoW the way they were
in Warcraft 3. But I'm certain they're there to maintain the flavour of WC3.

Hmm, nope. Cutesy is not the word I'd use to describe any of those
images. 🙂

Compare that to, say, Ratchet & Clank:

http://images-jp.amazon.com/images/P/B000070G2E.09.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Cute little anthropomorphised animal, big manga eyes, big smile.

Or Jak & Daxter:

http://www.xboxcovers.net/covers_ps2/Jak%20and%20Daxter-Precursor%20Legacy%20%5Bntsc%5D.jpg

Huge manga eyes, another cute anthropomorphised animal with an even
bigger grin.

THAT'S the sort of thing I have in mind when I hear the word "cutesy",
and I don't think WoW is really in that league. 🙂 I think the WoW art
style is a much more stern and "tough" style of cartoonishness.

Cheers!

Looking at this blog, which is cool, reminds me of how shallow and borng WoW
is

I went to EQ 2 and cancelled this game after 3 months

I see your point! The two games are as different as sweet cream butter and
40 weight motor oil.

Oh wait, no they're not.

Have fun on the grind from hell.

BTW, I have 4 friends now who have quit EQ2 to play WoW and love it.
And I don't know that many people. These are real-life friends not online
friends.
