Worlds slowest hard drive.

Well maybe not, but 45 minutes to format, 20 minutes to transfer a 1.5GB file. It's a 6.4GB Quantum SCSI drive, supposedly Utra SCSI (20MB/s), but dang, it's so slow when I transfer a file it takes like 5 seconds after completion to close the window. It's already set to Sync in Windows and there are no transfer mode jumpers, only drive number and termination. Blah.

It replaces a similar 2GB drive that was much faster, for holding backup files.

It IS significantly larger, 3x the size. Imagine going from 40GB to 120GB. Or from 120GB to 360GB! This is the same scale improvement, 3x!

Yes, after the hard drive comes a SCSI ZIP, something that has caused me performance problems before. However, the configuration now is the same as with the 2GB drive, yet the 2GB drive was around twice as fast!

Is the spec of the new drive the same as the old drive (ie cache, type of SCSI and RPM) ???

Have you tried a diff cable or another PC you could test it in, just to see whats happens ???

These are two different models from the same company. I really shouldn't have to make any changes in order to change from one SCSI Ultra drive to another. Both have the same cache and run at 5200RPM.

According to Nero the thing reads at 52x CD transfer mode. Which would be just under 10MB/s. That would be standard SCSI II. But both my Card and my Drive support SCSI Ultra, which is 20MB/s. My drive is detected as Ultra. SCSI BIOS sets it as ultra. But it runs at standard SCSI II. Hmmm

Not yet. I know it should be running at 20 but it now appears to be running at 10...still fast enough to backup data.

Sounds to me that you have an inadequate SCSI controler. I have a SCSI controler in my machine for my burner and my zip drive and it says that you should not expect to use the card for a SCSI hard drive. Try getting a beefier SCSI adaptor card.

Bwah...bwah...Bwah...Bullshit! (sniffle), must be catching something. Did you see where the smaller drive was much faster? Did I even mention the fact that I'm using what was once the best 40MB/s dual channel card you could get? Did you know that 40MB/s is still fast compared to most drives? Do you think I'm using one of those wimpy cards that comes with a zip drive or something? I run all QUALITY PARTS in my machine! NO, it's the DRIVE for CERTAIN, as I've never had a problem with other drives on this card. The Adaptec 2940UW is a FINE card!
