Applebred, the new 1,4 - 1,8GHz Durons running on a 266MHz FSB but still on the 128/64kb cache.

They really need a new guy to think of names for their future CPUs! I know it doesn´t really matter, but come on, Applebred, that sucks!

appleinbred? - not bad, but how would one inbreed those? Maybe I really don't want to know the answer to that one... <go to a happy place, go to a happy place!>

It just sounds a bit like the mutated offspring of an AXP & an old Duron, and they are from the same family after all..

The end is nigh.. (For this post at least)

Too me it sounds like a Macintosh wannabe of the ol' Thoroughbred core.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

Hmm, my wife likes Apple Butter on her bread, so Applebutter is ok, but Applebred? How about Bananabred?

This "applebred" is a bad news for me. In my country, AMD distributors behave somewhat like Intel. They don't let the price of AXP drop below $100 (still better than Intel, they don't let the Pentium price to drop below $120). I though, after Athlon 64 launch, AXP prices will drop to $60 to $70 here and I'll grab one. Now it seems than "new" Durons will take this place and I've to spend at least $80 to 100 for an AXP.

Actually Apple Butter makes a fairly good heatsink compound for short term use, better IMO than Vegemite, which is hard to find stateside, and FAR better on Cyrix chips!

Isn't that just the core name?

Is Thoroughbred or Teja any better? 😉 At least it's not Nehemiah!

AMD Is An Anagram Of MAD, Intel Is An Anagram Of INLET, Cyrix...Ah Who Cares?

Yes, it´s the core name, what else would it be???

IMO there´s logic to Thoroughbred, though it´s a bit too long, but considering the Athlon XP line, Thoroughbred seems ok.

There´s no logic to the name Applebred!

I´m not saying there should be logic in the core name, but Applebred is just too lame!

ThunderBird
Now that was a cool core name. 😎

If Intel always uses American towns for it's core names, what convention does AMD use? There doesn't seem to be one.. Maybe they just have suggestion boxes in the HQ?

Agreed, Thunderbird was a good name, but still pretty long.

I´m no salesman myself, and I have no idea on what consumers would think, but my guess on good core names would be names with "harmony" like Daisy or female names for the low-ends (Morgan really worked for me), and mythical or dangerous animal names like Chimera, Tiamat, Panther, Scorpion and Viper for the high-ends.

It would be nice to get the new 5,6GHz Panther from Intel!

How about Mom's-good-o'l-home-made-Lemon-bred

Might be a bit long but hey, its good stuff!

I know! name them after Sesame street characters. Imagine having 'Ernie' running your computer!

You just have to remember AMD has always, until now, stuck to using horse names for their cores.
Morgan IS a horse, just as Tbird and Tbred.

They are now moving to major city names like San-Diego, Athens and Paris.

As I said above, AMD uses horse names, but has stopped since the K8 (Sledge and Claw).
Furthermore Intel uses STREET names near their fabs, not city names. Tualatin is a river or something, Prescott is a street, Wilamette too!
