the 980 is a bit overkill for strictly 1080p gaming,IMO. its more a 1440p or higher beast, though at 1080p you could maybe crank all the filters up or render at something higher and downscale, which looks better and has less impact. Depending on the game, the 970 would likely be okay,I think. BUT,if you are considering a 980,you should consider the R9 Fury. Its only a bit more than the 980 in price or right about the same:

You would get around 980ti performance at about the same price of the 980. A great deal,I think. Only maybe 50 dollars between them,70 at the most.
I would think the 970 would do better,if only slightly. It is newer tech and certainly more efficient and a lot less load on your PSU,so thus less power used. Of course, you could get a R9 390,which is cheaper than the 970,last I checked and is probably right at the same level of performance, maybe a bit better, depending on the game. Could be worse too. Such is the nature of game optimizations.

Would you buy the GTX 970(3.5GB+0.5GB VRAM) or GTX 980(4GB) for 1080p gaming?
