Would a AMD Radeon HD7850 be ok on my system?

I have a gigabyte core 2 duo DD r II 800 motherboard with about 3 gig of ram. The graphics card is a cheapie so should I buy the above gc or get a newer m/b and gc?

Me myself have a AMD Radeon HD 7640G+7600M.
I works fine on my system, i have 8GB but only 3.46 usable so yes yours will work fine. The only game i can say that it totally can't play is Watch_dogs other then that it works fine. BTW i haven't tried newer games like Far Cry 4 on it yet.

You're not providing enough information.

The Radeon HD 7850 needs two 6-pin PCI-E connectors for power-- does your PSU have these? In addition, the minimum recommended wattage/amperage is 500W/20A. Does your PSU meet this?

You said Core 2 Duo, so your motherboard is a Socket 775 board. What processor do you have installed? There might be a bottleneck.

The Radeon HD 7850 needs a PCI-E x16 interface. It's safe to say that your motherboard probably has one of these, but it can't hurt to check.

It'd be a great help if you'd post your exact motherboard model.

As stated we need to know the exact CPU you have installed. There were many Core 2 Duo's and only the High End ones will be able to handle the 7870's. No matter what your performance will be limited due to the 800 MHz speed of the ram.

Also, like stated above, your PSU needs to be powerful enough to handle the GPU. Please state your exact PSU model and wattage. A model number would be best.

Yes for sure your System is a socket 775 as ALL Core 2 Duos' were LGA 775 socket. Many of the boards were PCI-e x16 2.0 during there run.

If you choose to get a new MB you will also need a new CPU and ram as all newer boards as of LGA 1336 and AM3+ are all DDR3 boards. There is a new standard out now that is just starting to be phased in and that is DDR4. So keep that in mind also.

The HD7850 requires a single 1 x 6-pin power connector.

If your power supply is 400w or greater, you should be fine.

edit: And, no reason to worry about your RAM or motherboard

Edit: Looks like GD is wrong. Googled a bunch of manufacturer 7850s and they all only need one 6-pin. Gonna have to get that fixed.
