I was wondering if anyone tried this. Length wise i Do not think it will be a problem. But if cards are too thick it might hit my serial data cables so it will not fit. I am not good with measurements so I am asking here. I am aware I need to upgrade my psu and that I need a 14pin adapter.

A picture is worth a thousand words. I see the issue now. Yes, if the card is long enough that it will run up against the SATA cables, they will be a problem. What I have done in a situation like that is use right-angle SATA connectors and move them to the headers that place them side-by-side rather than front-to-back.
But you need to look at the "L" shape of your headers' keyway and get the R-A connectors that match your headers:

And try to find the ones that are the lowest profile just to be safe.

If you can post a pic of the inside of your case and the GTX 970 you have in mind, I may be able to answer for you. But if you have 2 slots' width free with no obstructions, there shouldn't be any problem. The length is usually the problem.
