Would an Athlon 3700+ Bottleneck a 7900GTX??

Hi der, im considering buyin an Xfx Geforce 7900GTX for my recently built gaming system as i am hungry for power :twisted: , but im just a bit nervous that my Athlon 3700+ CPU (not OC'd) may not be able to handle it... Do you think it would be okay or would i have to upgrade my CPU?? If i do need an upgrade do you think an Athlon 4000+ would be suitable? Thanks.

I dont know much but everywhere i read, the 3700 will be fine. I have a 3700 with a 1900xt , just starting to oc my cpu to see what improvement i get on 3d06. I am guessing my ecs kn1sli will bottleneck more then your set up

According to what I've seen, unless you're multitasking you'd only stand to gain about 1% by upping your CPU. Course I'm not sure your graphic card update will up it by much either if you're not happy. Considered going SLI with the 7800 instead of updating to a 7900? It'll be less expensive and should net you a bigger performance bump.

Ye i would prefere SLI 7800gtx's but im actually returning my 7800gtx (not yet confirmed) so will be able to change it for a new card and seein as the 7900 is only 45euro more over here i thought i may as well go for it.

If you are having low framerates with a 3700+ and a 7800 GTX, you have a big problem somewhere.

Upgrading is not the solution.

No see thats the problem, ive ran 3DMark05 a few times and i score around 8060 (which from what ive been told is normal) so its kinda confusing why i got a sudden drop in framerates.... Also iv run performance checks on the parts in my system and they all read okay.

Then your problem is 1 of 2 things:


1. You are playing at higher settings than your system allows for.
If you think the best videocard out there entitles you to 1600+ resolution at 8xAA, it's not going to happen. No card will provide that in the newest games

2. There is a problem with your system
3dMark is not really a diagnostic tool. It doesn't really matter what results your performance chacks are giving you, if you're getting massive framerate drops at reasonable image quality settings and resolution - there is a problem with your system


Either way, upgrading is not the answer. You've got to find the source of the problem, mate.

There is something else wrong. If your scoring respectively high in 05,
and recieving poor game preformance, you need to take a close look at your system.

As for the bottleneck: Hell yes. Even single high end GPU's are seeing slight bottlenecks with the most high end CPU's. Video cards today are capable of such un-godly fill rates its insane - Dont get me wrong, its a fine combination. However we wont fully experience the full potential of our current generation until we see next years CPU's 😛

I"m still sitting on my 7800GT. Like I said, I'll have the X1800XL to toy with. Now that I've been making more and more $, I can toss some at
hardware and gather my own results and maybe review. I was actually thinking about posting an unlocking/overclocking guide for AGP 6800GS'...but that will have to wait for some time. My next purchase will be a 7900GT and an Asus Crossfire 3200 board ---I've heard great overclocking potential from that series.


The Opty 146 will be here on Tuesday, or Wednesday, depending if UPS feels like screwing me again :roll: The X1800 should be coming in around some time after that. The 7800GT and venice 3200 are getting pawned off, as I cant hang onto too much stuff (no more room)

A review in the last day or two showed that to get the most out of topshelf cards you should have at least an Athlon at 2.4GHz or Pentium at 3.2GHz.

Okay the site i bought my 7800GTX card off has accepted my RMA request so do you think i should pay the extra 50euro and change it for a 7900GTX or play it safe and just exchange for a fresh 7800? This is very important cause i need to be absolutely certain that i wont have any probs with the 7900 in my system...
