Discussion would an i7 980x still hold up in modern games?

Yes, the AVX thing is actually the only downside, but it only requires a handful of games, for example Formula 1. I have a 1080 Ti and everything is playable unless I want to play in 2K, which sometimes requires a GPU – lead to a bottleneck.
Due to the overclocking, the performance is now slightly worse than with an i7 8700k, so there is already a decent jump in performance.
