Would an MSI R9 280X bottleneck my AMD FX-6350?

No way. The 280x is high end. If anything the 6350 could hold you back. Is the 6350 overclocked?

I doubt it would bottleneck if had a smallish overclock (a few hundred mhz) on the 6350

6350 and 8350s are very similar. in some titles the AMD chips pose as bottlenecks compared to Intel. general threaded tasks and most games these are great chips and will not hold the GPU back and vice-versa. Tom's recc an FX6300, the 6350 is just a refinement of that chip that's about 10? maybe 15% faster overall. so almost all the same rhetoric applies. Honestly i think this will be a very good match for each other.

On a kind of related topic, does anybody know of a list somewhere online that gives a each gpu a cpu that matches it works well with (ie, as small a bottleneck as possible)?

no, more likely the CPU will be the bottleneck

there's no official chart, but sometimes Tom's will remark on CPU vs GPU bottlenecks on sysbuilder marathons or testing specific build types. i think they did something like that recently for an AM1 build?
