I want to get the 3700x while still keeping under a budget of 500 dollars so I can only buy the 3700x and motherboard. I don't know if it will work well since I only have the rx580 and 8gb ram.
Should I just buy the 3600 so I can upgrade my ram to 24gb? I dont want to bottleneck anything.

oh sorry
this is my setup right now https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4rpyJ8
Ok, my assumption was correct.

One of the "quirks" of the AMD CPUs is* they need good RAM to perform really well. More than Intel.

So, my recommendation stands: get 16GB 3200Mhz (or faster) RAM, a 3600(X) and a good B450 board. You'll be set for a good while for games and general productivity (even streaming!).

See how much that amounts to and go from there.

One thing that caught my eye. Your PSU is 430W, so I think the RX 580 might be a bit tight with the new CPU you want. Consider upgrading the PSU to a 500W or a bit higher.

Cheers!
Would you post a bit more details of your current platform, please? Specially RAM speeds and Motherboard.

Going on a limb and assuming you have an Intel platform with a slow-ish RAM, then I'd say get the 3600, with a good cooler (Noctua and the like) and speedy RAM on a good quality B450 that can OC the 3600 via Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO). And yes, more RAM is also a good idea. I'd say 16GB is a good amount for today's work loads.

Cheers!
