My Gtx 980 Ti, Asus Maximus VIII Hero and i7 6700K have served me well for many years but I might be getting some money in the coming months so I can finally upgrade, but I'm not entirely sure what to upgrade to or if what I'm planning to buy is a good idea.
For the motherboard I'm currently looking at an MSI Z790 Gaming Plus motherboard or a MSI PRO B760-P DDR4 II motherboard so I don't have to change my RAM; I don't know if buying new DDR5 RAM would be worth it. I currently have 4x8gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 MHz RAM.
For the CPU I'm looking at the i7-12700KF and for the GPU I'm looking at an RTX 4060 Ti, since they just seem like straight-up upgrades but I've also heard there's been some controversy about 4060 Ti's in the past.
I'm going to keep all my old drives but I'm on the fence about getting a new CPU cooler; I have either a Noctua NH-D14 or NH-D15 (I can't remember), and don't know if upgrading is worth it. I'm also not really sure what CPU case to get but I might go with the Antec VSK-4000B-U3/U2 ATX Case because it has some 5.25 inch front trays that I could use for some of my old stuff. Either way I desperately need something to replace my very, very old Zalman case.
I also have a NZXT C650 650W PSU and don't know if I need to upgrade.
So would the purchases I have in mind be worth it? Do you have any other suggestions? Please let me know.

If the money is in the coming months, next gen AMD and possibly Intel will be out by the time you have said money. I would not buy a 4060ti. AMD has better cards for the money right now.

The 4060 Ti is a good GPU but has the problem that it originally came with only 8GB RAM. You can not get a 16GB version but the starting price for the 16GB version is an extra $60 ($430 vs $370). If all you are doing is 1080p gaming then 8GB should be enough, however, 8GB will be a problem very quickly for 1440p or higher. If you went to $460+ you can get a 16GB RX 7800XT that is 40% faster in rasterization gaming and 5% faster in RT gaming at 1440p. Overall the 7800XT is IMO the better buy over the 4060Ti 16GB.

4060Ti is overpriced for the performance level it offers. Nothing 'wrong' with it exactly. 4060 Ti 16GB is silly at another $100 on top for no performance gain, only memory capacity, and the 4060Ti really isn't fast enough to run much beyond 1080p high, so the extra memory goes mostly unused.

RTX 4070 Super is my mid-range Nvidia GPU of choice. AMD is more price competitive though.

Here you can see the 4060Ti beat out by the cheaper RX6800 or similarly priced 7700XT.

https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-com...-for-the-same-dollar599-as-the-vanilla-4070/2

And you can see the 7800XT out pacing the regular RTX 4070. But the 4070 Super is cut down 4070 Ti and sits just over the 7800XT, but for quite a bit more money.

12700KF is only $173 right now, I think the 30 bucks for 2 more P cores and boost clocks is worth it. I bought one last year at $190 and also stuck with DDR4, though I eventually did get a DDR4 4000 kit that was cheap.

You should get a new power supply, yes. It will have aged, and you are looking to throw much more demanding parts at it. 650W would be sufficient for the 4060Ti. The rest I would lean towards 750W.

If you want 5 1/4" bays, I always look to the Phanteks Enthoo series for that.

LGA 1700 socket today:
12th gen 8P cores + 8 e cores maximum (16 threads)
13th gen 8P cores + 16 e cores maximum (24 threads) (Of note the 13700k has 8 e cores like the 12900k)
14th gen 8P cores + 16 e cores maximum (24 threads) (Of note the 14700k has 12 e cores)

They are claiming a new CPU line will be launched for LGA1700 without E cores.

8 P cores, 10 P core, or 12 P cores for 16, 20, and 24 threads.

For gamers, e-core do very little. They are useful for large multithreaded tasks.

If that 8 P core i5 is reasonably priced, it should out perform the 12700k easily with its 8P cores and 4 e cores and be a nice little upgrade. No motherboard swap needed.
